Video: Floating Lumia in Social Media Week New York 2012: Nokia magic trick #1

| February 16, 2012 | 19 Replies

As part of Social Media Week, Nokia hid two magicians behind a secret trophy case which could only be found/accessed through Foursquare. This is one of three magic trics filmed during Social Media Week opening party in New York.

This trick was a bag of -meh-.

Steve jobs did that trick first

Sick and tired of lumias promos

  2. Peter says:

Its hanging. I can see it wobling like its hanging on a wire.

    • Jay Montano says:

It could have been a good trick, but awful execution. There are many other tricks done with phones that are much better. It would score a 10 perhaps if the measurement was the lame-o-meter.

Am I the only one who noticed the wrong placed silicon-cover? Promofail²

  4. ruaka says:

Let’s hope they will push the same their new S40/meltemi/whatever the name of their new linux+gnu+wayland+qt

Part of the problem is that Microsoft too is paying for the promotion. That’s a lot of money to spend.

But maybe they will have no need to push their other plateform :
it seems that nokia sold approximatively 2M N9 :
    19.6M smartphone – 16.8M (symbian) = 2.8 Lumia + N9
They announced “well over 1M Lumia sold” january the 26th.
Let’s say “well over” means 1.5M
Lumia has been sold only 6.5 weeks during Q4 and 3.5 weeks in 2012 Q1.
That means 1M Lumia sold in Q4
    2.8-1M = 1.8M N9 sold in Q4
With 6 more weeks, it’s probably more than 2M N9 sold now.

    • Jay Montano says:

You know precisely how many Symbian phones Nokia sold how?

      • rueaka says:

smartphones in Q3 were only symbian : 16.8 were sold. since nokia says that symbian sales numbers are decreasing it’s not a bad guess. Also look at the end of the linked article in my previous post : there is a tweet (in english) of a participant of qt days in florence. A nokia guy told during the conf that there is more than 2m meego phones out there.

        I answer to Mark below

        • Jay Montano says:

          OK that’s possible.

          But decreasing compared to what?

Everything is decreasing since Q4 2010.
There was a slight (negligible) increase from Q3 over Q2.
The new Symbian handsets were more widely available in Q4.

I would have expected Symbian/Nokia sales to have improved in Q4 and whilst we aren’t given the strict break down, there is 2-3M extra sales in Q4.

In all seriousness, given the portfolio of the competition and what Nokia offered in 2011 it’s not surprising that the sales are what they are. All the previous years, Nokia has been able to offer more compelling devices in comparison. Last year, not really.

          • rueaka says:

Ya this year was a transition one : no flagship symbian phones and Lumia arrived very late 2011. So, the sale numbers are not so bad given this. Anyway, I hope that the 2012 revenue will progress to keep Nokia out of buying.

And about N9, since Nokia will not give any number, we will have to wait : if the rumors about meltemi are true, we might have interesting numbers about Qt 5.0 compatible devices (seems that symbian will not be supported).

    • Mark says:

Your logic is poor and none of your numbers have any substance.

The Symbian numbers may not have decreased from Q3 to Q4 – Nokia refers to a decreasing trend year on year which speeded up as the year went by. This does not equate to an absolute numbers drop Q to Q and, given Nokia’s Symbian sales have peak in Q4 – throws your numbers out.

Canalys – who are one of the big four analysts – on the other hand have sales at 18 million Symbian, 1.2 million Lumia and 600K N9. This appears to backed up by figures from Gartner.

So who are we to trust? The random interpretation of some broken hearted fanboy on a message board who has no access to numbers and who has made a number of incorrect assumptions or the interpretation of two of the big analyst houses.

I think I know who my money would be one.

      Quit it. It’s boring.

      • noki says:

Frist you and I know that Canalys numbers are wrong as Lumias did not sold 1 million on Q4. And Canalys if you like that are realy terrible on WP/WM combo losing alot of market share according to them.

Now the big question is how many Symbians were sold???

According to the Report it sold less than expected, on the other end the average sale price went up. Now it could not have gone up because of symbians that were on discount with no new symbian devices on sale on Q4, so the only thing that could push the haverage sale point were the Lumias the N9 and the cash it got from Microsoft for promotion and apparently included here, This was the only number I missed in my original analysis.. still and judging from the order things come in the report My estimative is that the N9 sold over 1.5 M in Q4….

#Note if N9 sold 600k only its still an impressive number for a declared dead phone.
Also some sources indicate that it sold spectacularly well given the circumstances in China so thats the number that might be escaping us all.

Any way I do hope the Lumia sells alot of phones Nokia sure needs those sales to make up for the unsold Symbians this strategy brought us. I do pity that Lumias had to be force feed in to annihilating altogether any remotely competitive platforms to WP… This may be good for Microsoft but sure is not good for NOKIA sales numbers…

        • Mark says:

“Frist you and I know that Canalys numbers are wrong as Lumias did not sold 1 million on Q4.”

You’re right. They sold more than 1 million. The numbers

        1) If I wasn’t a fanboy, I would have better things to do than reading mynokiablog :) , unless I would be working for Nokia PR of course.
        2) my heart is fine thank you.
        3) my logic is not poor, my logic is just … logic. BUT to be logic doesn’t mean to be right, of course.
In fact, I have only access to public numbers since I don’t work for Nokia PR. I’m rather ok with all the logic and numbers stuffs (doing math – as a job).
        4) It’s interesting that trying to figure out how many N9 were sold from the small bits made public by Nokia made you post with so much animosity.
I mean, as told in 1, somebody commenting on this “message board” is some sort of a Nokia fanboy -or working at Nokia PR. And why a Nokia “fanboy” shouldn’t be happy to see that Nokia might sell a lot of one of his newest and most expensive device instead of mid-range symbian ones ?
        5) I’ve never said that those numbers were mine (I put a source in my post) and the guy who made this article is not the kind of “random interpretation” guy : he might be wrong but he has adress the “canalys” numbers. They were plain wrong about Lumia (by a 50% margin) …
And what about bloomberg numbers (1.4M N9 sold in Q4 http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-01-22/nokia-lumia-sales-seen-topping-1-million-in-respite-for-stock.html ). Are they broken hearted ?

          I dunno. You tell me.

It seems to me that it’s not okay to be happy about possible good Lumia sales according to some.

          • rueaka says:

I’m up for huge sales of Lumia ! But as we know the numbers of Lumia sales, there is more fun to try to find out what we’re not told ;)
