Nokia Lumia 710 free on Contract, T-Mobile USA – On T-Mobile’s best seller’s list :D

| February 19, 2012 | 67 Replies

James emailed to let us know that the Nokia Lumia 710 is available for free at T-Mobile with a 2 year contract (or $349 sans contract).

http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/Phones/cell-phone-detail.aspx?cell-phone=Nokia-Lumia-710-Black

At the start of the month, you might have seen MS‘ own stores having a free Lumia 710 on qualifying contracts. I think with this one, T-Mobile is offering the same contracts as before, just with lower priced Lumia. Looking at other sections of the site it says it is a web only discount.

Furthermore, what is interesting is that it seems to be in T-Mobile USA’s best sellers list, occupying two spaces for black and white model. Not bad. Thanks T-Mobile. That is quite a feat to see a Nokia on an American Carrier’s best seller’s list. I do distinctly remember someone tipping us this story a while back of the 710 being on the best seller’s list but when we checked, it wasn’t on any list at all. T-Mobile now seems to have amended it back to what that tipster saw (I think before the price had changed).

If you go into the reviews, there are more than 150. I don’t know why it always says 115.

    • Hary says:

And if you actually read some review, you will see lot of them are from fans/people who did not buy the actual device. Also, lot of early reviews seem to be from the people who received the device a week before the CES for testing.

      • Kaizer Allen says:

Haven’t read the reviews yet. But if true, that’s sad.

        • Jay Montano says:

Interesting. Where’s the bit that says the reviews are from testers? What proportion are from testers? Should we discount and ignore reviews if they are from testers?

      • Buzzinga / jody says:

reading reviews until page 14 of the t mobile website i actually got the impression that it is performing well and being live by must of its buyers, it is the only phone with five star reading by the way

      • Jed says:

I would say not a lot in fact most if not all are people reviewing them cause they like them. If they like the device they like the device whether they paid money or got it for free. It’s a good phone, and hopefully the fact that people like it won’t bug other people enough to put it down…

I was wondering how long until a hater found a way to work in a subtle dig on this article. Like really now.

VERY good deal. I paid about $89 for mines before the $50 mail in rebate. Currently, Walmart has the Lumia 710 for $18.99 WITHOUT a mail in rebate AND YOU GET A FREE $50 WALMART GIFT CARD INSTANTLY!

You can then use the Wal-Mart gift card in the store after your purchase.

It is great to see the Nokia name becoming respected in the US again, to see the huge Marketing push. The Lumia 710 is plastered on every wall, almost every display and atleast 3 times on the windows of the Tmobile stores.

I honestly have never see ANY phone take up so much advertising space inside a carrier store. Now, if only the reps would push the devices more. The advertising is successful as it gets the customers attention.

I actually saw a customer buy a Lumia 710, the first Nokia phone that I have seen sold in a T-Mobile store with my own eyes in YEARS!

  3. Kaizer Allen says:

It looks like all the efforts and risks that Nokia took have paid off. Good job! Now, come March 18th and we’ll see how Nokia Lumia 900 will perform on a larger carrier. That is, AT&T.

If the entertainment bundle for the 800 doesn’t work out, they should just release the device to T-Mobile, as a successor to 710. So, the design doesn’t go to waste. I’m pretty sure folks won’t dismiss the device immediately just because it’s a Nokia. They’d be more willing to try it first.

  4. manu says:

the device is getting negative review india,it has some call ending problem and poor battery backup.nokia 603 is prefered over it here.by the way both are priced similar.if you goto gsm arena user opinion page you will know it.

    • Michael Prince says:

India seems to have found a new obsession with Samsung and Android. I’m not sure I understand … but whatever ..

      • Gst says:

Android obsession is there everywhere(now slightly reduced), even in north america.nokia 710 is not perfect phone it has some bugs and lack of features to be fixed. In India people prefer android because nokia’s weird way of pricing their symbian phone at higher value wen compare to their competitor on same specs, even it is priced more than their wp7 with higher specs(nokia 603 and nokia 710 almost priced same) and wp7 in current form missing basic features can’t make people to buy wp7 over android.

        • twig says:

Google/Android just got caught stealing iphone users personal data. Feel sorry for the Android blind. Backlash just starting.

          • twig says:

It is JUST starting to hit the u.s. media now and its making people very angry already. Our courts could be packed full. All over the kim kommanda radio show yesterday. Time for people to switch to windows where you can opt out. Who wants google to go though your emails? They have NO right. Its an illegal search.

      • TrollKnightRises says:

thats because Samsung released galaxy Y entry level phone which still is great than most of symbian^3/s60v5 phones of its price range

  5. Viipottaja says:

The black version was sold out on Best Buy’s online store as well! Not bad.

  6. stylinred says:

the 710 is selling rather well here too, im basing it on all the people i know who’ve suddenly got one… some have it as a 2nd device and say its better than their iphone/android

  7. manu says:

in india its like those who have used a dumbphone or symbian earlier, cant take the idea of buying a phone with no bluetooth file transfer memory card and worse poor battery backup.android seems a perfect replacement for those people.some local companies like micromax, spice etc are taking full advantage of recent craze for android, people buys anything with android.

    • Mark says:

Wait… you’re talking about poor battery life and then recommending Android?

The Bluetooth bit I get, but the Android’s I’ve owned and used have appalling battery lives.

      • TrollKnightRises says:

Lol Lumia710 has worst battery life even compared to 1ghz/1.4ghz android phones of its price range

        • migo says:

Not true at all. Only the new superphones with 1800mah batteries and larger have decent battery life, but they cost twice what the lumia 710 costs

  8. Janne says:

I guess this exactly is the kind of stuff that made Nokia go Lumia.

We’ll see if it works overall and globally, but at least for the moment it is great to see new-found excitement in Nokia in places and reviews where there used to be only scepticisim.

    • Janne says:

And I say Lumia because at this rate Lumia is the only Windows Phone that will matter. :) Rest can play for the scraps.

      • anonymous says:

Haha :D you know you’re right when people suddenly have a hard time remembering that the OS had existed before these 2 devices (710, 800) were launched.

    • manu says:

yes you are right there is program called cell guru where the guys there enjoyed giving extremely negative review about nokia and symbian and every episode they say nokia doesnt have space to exist b/w iphone and android.i should have slapped them if i had met them in person.
Now even those dumb holes are astonished by lumia and giving good review about.ofcourse they mentioned about absence of bt file tranfer and mem.card support.
but they didnt mention any negatives about iphone as if its perfect device on earth.

      • Viipottaja says:

Manu, sorry I asked you this in another thread but cannot find it anymore. :D I am just curious about the use cases in India (I assume) – what types of files do folks mostly transfer via BT? Music, pictures, all, other? Also, the Micro SD – do people copy from one phone to another or is it mostly just to add storage for themselves? And how wide spread do you think both of those things are (bt file transfer and SD use) – I realise its difficult to access beyond your own peers.

        • manu says:

its like we send songs and pictures among friends almost everyday for example my friend has an n8 we will take pic on his phone and send it to our phones almost everyday.same goes to mem card if i go to a friends house and he has got some new songs or something ill take out my mem card and transfer some to it to via his laptop.
Also many dont have pc here so they rely on there mobile phones to download songs, videos even movies.data plans are very cheap here and has good speed.also more than app people careabout bang for buck ,camera, battery backup and a device which will last as long as possible.thats main reason symbian still no.1 os here.

          • Viipottaja says:

but I thought you said data is expensive and unreliable and that’s why cloud services (e.g. Skydrive) would not work.. so I am slightly confused now, if people even downloading movies over the air!

            • manu says:

2g data plans are cheap,ya 3g data plans are very expensive.movie means in 3gp format.nobody cares or know about skydrive and all those stuffs, many still dont care about data plans also.skydrive will noway work in india.and ya many are unreliable only few like vodadone docomo are good with data plan speeds and service.i use vodafone

            • manu says:

2g data plans are cheap,ya 3g data plans are very expensive.movie means in 3gp format.nobody cares or know about skydrive and all those stuffs, many still dont care about data plans also.skydrive will noway work in india.and ya many are unreliable only few like vodadone docomo are good with data plan service.i use vodafone.also cellphone network coverage will be a major problem in semi urban and village area.

              • Viipottaja says:

ok. still, if people are alrady downloading songs, videos and movies, don’t really see why they would not be able (or even willing) to upload e.g. compressed pics to their cloud services. sure, it would probably be a niche market or at best contained to cities and to a part of the Indian middle-class (afaik, often estimated at about 300 million people :) ) market. Obviously, its not as viable in India as it is most/if not all OECD countries, for example.

                • Buzzinga / jody says:

really some people aren’t ready with the cloud yet, and even if it is available already, storing on cloud ain’t just viable yet. 3g signal is very spotty here in the Philippines and I’m sure that id also the case in some countries where Nokia has a major presence. as for me i am on wifi right now, routed dsl connection, when I’m out,i use gsm for net brOwsing, works fine but i can’t watche YouTube or anything because it’s fan much more stream my doc on cloud if ever.all because 3g is not available most of the areas where i am. it may not be the case for you but it is still the case of many Nokia customers, of the next billion Nokia customers ;)

                • manu says:

as i already told you many dont even care about data plan, also why do one need to waste data usage with cloud and all.maybe it will be accepted in future but not now.also sd card is still better than cloud ,many local cellmakers even produce phones with multiple sd card slots.as i told you market in india and u.s is quiet different.i for one cant imagine of having a phone tied to a carrier for two-three years and postpaid plans.

        • Buzzinga / jody says:

it’s because in some countries mine included, not all p places have wifi and or not all pcs have bt so they resort to using micro sd to transfer whatever files that it’s why memory card reader sellsa lot ;)

          • Buzzinga / jody says:

and to be honest in school where i work i use my n9 as data storage device because at school we only have old pcs, we have no wifi at school or an internet connection. something that Android device and meego device could be very helpful.

  9. illidan says:

here in India , Bluetooth is frequently used for transferring
music files , videos etc . as for the micro SD slot , some people have the tendency to store many songs , videos etc . so , they do require an additional SD card . most importantly , Nokia is starting to loose its brand appeal in India . about an year ago , no one cared about which OS ran on their phone . so , every one used to buy a Nokia phone . but nowadays , people look at the specs of the device , the OS etc .

    • Viipottaja says:

gotcha. luckily for Nokia (and probably in part thanks to Nokia) removable microSD support is coming to WP as well.. can’t recall if its expected in Tango or only in Apollo.

      • illidan says:

Another biggest drawback of windows phone is that the user cannot install pirated apps . Amost 80 to 90 % of the people in india wont pay for apps .
So, if windows 8 doesn’t have the option to sideload pirated apps , then people wont buy nokia windows phones . With that being said , the average apps download for an average user is very less , may be in the 10 to 30 range .

        • manu says:

ya absolutely right.for people in u.s or u.k say 4 or 5 pound or dollar for an app is not a big then when convert it into indian money 4*45=180rs thats more than price of a pirated pc game dvd.
This is also main reason game consoles dont sell well india,pc is widely used game medium.

          • TrollKnightRises says:

            yeah valid points
forget about the hardware and os…..all most of people do care about is…..
avalibility of pirated apps or how easy or difficult it is to jailbreak/hack it
and even worst is that windows phone 7 os doesn’t even have Opera mini! what a joke

            • noki says:

Just buy an N9 then, its kinda pathetically easy to install pirated apps…(not sure thats a good thing, but none of my apps cost a dime so :D don’t care) heheheh

              • manu says:

nokia hadnt launched n9 in india.buy india was one of launch country for lumia devices.clear strategy by elop.n9 should have done extremely well in india.many still buy imported one from graymarket and ebay at hefty price tag.

        • Viipottaja says:

well, I guess apps will be completely free, add supported and/or cheaper (perhaps like you say 10-30 rupias and not the rather theoretical direct conversion to 180 rupias Manu calculated) in India then.

Obviously the business model has to adapt to the market. Nokia has managed to get quite big downloads for the Ovi/Nokia Store and Nokia Music in India. Not sure I see why they would not be able to do the same with the WP Marketplace.

          • manu says:

for ovistore its right not exactly 10-30 rupee but 50-100 rs for hd games.but this is not case with windows marketplace, its a direct conversion,i just checked in only 4-5 hd games are available all of it is priced around 150-250 rupee.

            • viipottaja says:

ok, sounds like something they will have to change. hopefully nokia’s experitise with the indian market will help make that happen.

  10. manu says:

android has started to gain attention here sometime in 2011.thanks to review programs like cell guru as i earlier mentioned, also local companies and carriers promoting it like anything.many dont even know what is advantage of android ,what it does ,they only know its something good as ads and reviews mentioned.for eg. One of my friend bought a galaxy s2 he has been using it for two months when i checked his phone.i was atonished to see he didnt have even a single app downloaded and he dont know what is android market.i asked him why did he bought such a pricey device, then he told he was about to get an n8 then someone told him symbian and nokia is bad.

  11. manu says:

another recent misconception in india nowadays is symbian=slow, android =fast.

  12. manu says:

the india market is quiet opposite to u.s or u.k.noone buys a device on contract,no one take postpaid plans, not many care for data plans and speed.also no one care about iphone, app store, cloud service, syncing with itunes or whatever.

  13. dss says:

Nokia is making some good money on that one for sure..

  14. Buzzinga / jody says:

oh my God that is also quite the case of the Philippines, my student was telling me about Android when he saw my n9, those points above like bt transfer is valid,i use bt a lot to transfer files, like word, ppt, excel, through my NetBook to my n 9 so i can print them in school. if wp wanted greater chance of squaring it Knut with Android it has to acquire Android capabilities like removable sd, bt transfer availability at across the points price range

    • noki says:

You realy need to find out about sftp://N9(ip) its way more convenient/safer/faster than BT transfers…

      • Buzzinga / jody says:

hOw is that? my hp NetBook has an always on bt, i simply tap on the bt toggle app on my n9 then presto it’s on and will accept anything from docs to music files, no need to sync it using micro usb.

        • viipottaja says:

would”mt it be much faster over wifi?

          • Buzzinga / jody says:

im not that technical enough to use wifi, though yes i have a desktop here that it’s connected to a dsl internet which i route through a wifi so my NetBook and n9 can receive internet connection. :)

            • viipottaja says:

oh ok,did not know N9 does not have an inbuilt wifi syncing option.

              • Buzzinga / jody says:

honestly idid not know i can use wifi to transfer files, like really? i thought i only use wifi to connect to the internet lol forgive me for my ignorance

                • viipottaja says:

again, as i dont’t have them n9 don’t know if that feauture built in or if there is an app for it (perhaps what noki was linking to above). some other OSs have that (recall e.g. reading about WP apparently having an easy automated syncing option).

                • noki says:

Yes its via wifi. it uses ssh to do the data transfer so its secure. also as fast as your wifi is. It was just a hint maybe you will like it, plus its more universal any computer on-line can do it, and you can even use it over different networks or remotely.

  15. Idol says:

Dude, it’s ranked #20 by bestseller list…not 3! Huge difference
