Waterproof nano coating for future Nokia phones?

| May 29, 2012 | 21 Replies

Apparently, Nokia will be making future phones/Lumias waterproof.  Well that’s what’s going around the blogosphere now anyway. What the actual quote was:

Nano technology lets us do it. Superhydrophobic technology makes water bounce, it stops it, rolls it off the device and leaves it water impregnant, that’s the magic, that’s what we’re going to bring to the party

Odd. It seems to be pretty much what Nokia said before at Nokia World what the intentions of this technology was. Furthermore this was one of several things Stephen Elop had been hinting at. Elop said he saw amazing technology in Nokia’s labs that he was going to make sure make it to market instead of staying amazing behind closed doors. He hinted at the 808 PureView, remember? He said that amazing as the N8 is, it was a mere fraction of what Nokia could do in the labs – and boy, did Nokia bring out some magic from the labs with the 808. Elop also mentioned about a phone that had a coating which could be submerged in water and is waterproof.

We don’t know how long it will be for Nokia to bring this to market. Nokia has previously demoed a part of this technology in the Nokia 700 – water droplets bouncing off the display. However, full submersion has not been shown publicly yet.

The real test would be completely underwater, and I’m feeling quite pessimistic about that. Was wondering if Nokia could make more advancement in solar-powered technology that would at least help the Lumia’s battery life in hot areas.

Haha, yes there were other rugged, waterproof Nokias but this is a different implementation.

Good point sharing that video though as that should be part of the history of the indestructible nokia meme.

      That was just super rugged.

I loved the jelly one and the golf one was epic. haha.

What a crap? What Lumia has got to do with it? This is Nokia concept from times before Lumia, and now it have to around? But who cares Lumia? I don’t in this context. There is written “Nokia” not “Lumia” at the box.

  9. observer says:

Hmm, my Nokia 700 did survive a drop in the toilet, however it died a few months later from wet hand manipulating it to keep it away from rain.
Don’t know about this tech, maybe they got it the other way around.
