Video: Microsoft Surface Tablet Magnetic Type Covers hands on
So, Microsoft went ahead and produced their own Windows 8 tablet. I’m not sure what to think of the tablet, other than a little uninspiring, but it’s early days yet. Some of the app demoes I briefly glanced at looked pretty nice though.
What was intriguing was the magnetic cover thing, similar in a way to the covers popularised by iPad. But the cover isn’t just a cover. It isn’t a stand either because the Surface tablet has its own stand. No, it’s a keyboard.
There are two versions, a 3mm thin pressure sensitive multitouch keyboard. Then there’s a touch type cover which is the more traditional cover. It makes it a little bit like an ASUS transformer except the hooking together is more natural. Just clip on with magnet. On the downside, I don’t think there’s additional power sources or connections on the keyboard base, and nor can it be used independently of a table due to the nature of the stand.
OK job. I hope Nokia does better. They are pretty much the only ones without a next gen tablet, right? (I say next gen as Nokia was so hipster as to create tablets before they were popular). I say this gives Nokia something to aim for. Nothing was overly impressive so it shouldn’t be too hard to beat it, but given the way Nokia just loves to create error and compromise, it wouldn’t surprise me if they couldn’t even match this. Sorry, but you’re yet to prove yourself wrong on that regard, Nokia.

Very true, just to create a bigger challenge for itself, nokia will create a screwup of their first tablet
MS is launching their own tablet..hmm..intersting. Whats happening with Nokia’s cofee tab??? Will there any market left for this cofee tab? MS-Nokia alliance is not favouring Nokia at the moment!!!
it never were any cofee tab from nokia, it was just god damn good looking fan concept.
I hope they will bring something simillar.

And one more thought: time to sell my Nokia shares which I bought at 1.89 EUR in hope of a hype from take-over fantasies. Seems they are finished now, all effort for their own tablet becomes burned money as well. Too slow, too late, great products suppressed for strategical reasons, soul sold, identity lost.
go cry somewhere else… you think they are where they are today because of Microsoft then your life is a virtual one… if meego refuse to sell after marketing its MS fault… Before I left Nigeria all the advertise is N-nine with free one gig data for six month… but nokia has lost the battle to the clueless citizens who thinks black berry is the best phone in the world… they sell their iphones and super phones just to get the useless curve of bold. Then why not buy a PC or laptop without Windows pre-installed and install Linux on it?
I know I’m not familiar with the tablet world but what I do know is that they’re not customisable when compared to a PC or laptop (the only downside is its lack of hardware upgrading options). Why some people want this in a tablet is beyond me.
Microsoft is only giving OEMs a clue with this device on own to make kool device for the windows 8. I believe there are good ones already but this will also help them to design better devices. even compete in price… at 8– dollars am getting pro. RT is good but I need a full desktop where I can work with autocad photoshop etc…
Yup. I already find ASUS’ W8 products a little more interesting than this.

Nice concept any idea if the keyboard can work without being attached to the Sureface? As in build in battery an bluetooth?
it wont work… maybe if its a Bluetooth keyboard but so far its not…
On that tablet there should be Nokia logo, not M$. That would lift Nokia back to it’s feet.
But I fear that Nokia is too far behind on this tablet market and maybe we never see Nokia tablet
Surface just changed the tablet and ultrabook game in my opinion. Or at least the Intel version. Why would anyone buy a ultrabook when they could have this? I really can’t think of an area this device does not cover..
You want to play Diablo 3, covered. Want to import RAW photos and edit them in Lightroom, covered. Want to play a simple game like Angry Birds covered. Want to paint in Corel Painter or Photoshop using a stylus covered. It is not only the coolest looking slate out there but also laptop. I think they hit this one out of the park. It just solves every area I had with slates and ultrabooks.

But I’m not a “pad” fan except for the inflight entertainment thing were I use mine.
For casual mail I Use my n950. For real work my almost workstation laptop (think I will replace its by a Samsung series 7 15 inch), leaving the pad thing for movies and wasting time wile going across the big pond.

MMM… I’m still wondering how MS will deal with WinRT vs Win X86/64 thing… This kind of device aren’t aimed to proper work, they’re just to do little small task, despite I’m bein capable of doing my Documents on a Android tablet (bought an Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 plus a BT Keyboaard) it isn’t a thing I really wanna do… and playing a game like Diablo, sorry but it’s to hard Diablo a the likes need biggers screens… One Note, MS doens’t need Nokia, in a whole year they’ve learned a lot from Nokia, an one of the most valuable thing they learn is that really goo danm design sell!!!
Microsoft seem very well prepared for the transition to touch screens.. I am surprised. Great work on Windows 8 and this tablet..
I definitely disagree with you on calling Surface uninspiring Jay. While I would love for Nokia to produce something even better than Surface I don’t think they will be able to in the first round and now I think it will better if Nokia concentrates on the mid-range because Microsoft has the high-end sewn up.
Though I’m making a few assumptions about what we don’t know such as I assume it will have LTE on board for North America and whatever is most appropriate for the rest of the world. I don’t care about the price myself because this will be the best tablet ever conceived to date. I was hoping that I would be going for a Nokia tablet and I still might–perhaps a Intel Surface and a Nokia WinRT.
This is the first tablet with a full-fledged OS, EPIC has already said that Microsoft hit it out of the park with it and they cannot wait to get the Unreal Engine on it. The flood gates are going to open and this will push W8 tablets into the mainstream. I want one now.
Soon, this Nokia blog will be turned out windows blog, Nokia will not be any more..! Jay needs to consider other options.
Microsoft betrayed its partners…They should have remained as software giant….Now it is not healthy for both its hardware partners and to it.
As Nokia killed the Symbian and abandoned the lovely “Meego”…they don’t have any place to go. Even if they drop MS and came out and continue with Meego….it will be an another year to come up with excellent products. May be loyal people like Jay, Me and other wait, But Market won’t.
The last hope for Nokia is today, Windows 8 Apollo sneak peak summit will tell us about Nokia’s hard work of last two years. If this turn out fail…Then Nokia fail. Blackberry 10 will be the third eco system. Google will come up with Desktop OS and Microsoft will soon reap their effects of its betrayal.
