DNA and Elisa Finland’s top phones for July

| August 1, 2012 | 48 Replies

Very briefly as my train is now heading up to the country side and losing signal:

Joni shares data from DNA and Elisa Finland on their top phones for July. I guess no numbers yet for TeliaSonera?

The Finns are loving their Samsung Phones, in particular, the new SGSIII pushed to number 1. Great news that the N9 makes it to the top 15.

10 out of the top 15 phones are now Nokia for Elisa. That’s up from 8 in June. DNA is more Samsung friendly with 6/10 being Samsung, 4/10 Nokia. iPhone shares number 1 spot with SGSIII. Nokia Lumia 610 holds it own at number 3; same spot as last month. Lumia 800, 900 and 710 stay in top 10 too.

I think we can see here why Lumia 610 is so important to sustaining Lumia volumes in Q3. At least device volumes and the perceptions related to that.

But no denying that Samsung has done a wonderful job in attracting customers, in Finland too. Nokia fumbling for the past several years of course made their job a lot easier than it used to be.

    • Bloob says:

I’ve actually started to see the 610 out there in the hands of some high schoolers (or around that age).

      • migo says:

What is the 610 selling for compared to the 710?

In Canada the 610 is sold on a different network from the 710, so that’s more likely to be the deciding factor between the two of them, but the price is roughly the same.

  2. Aki says:

So Nokia/Microsoft is strong in the business segment.
Sounds to me that MS needs to do something (urgently) to deviate from the “business” image, and figure out how to attract the youth.

    • arts says:

      my experience is different however.

The youth of my area seems to be very attracted to wp with its fluidity, but i cant recommend it to them just yet, when it does not have USSD.

you hear me nokia? GO GET USSD NAOOOOOOOOOOOO

      • Janne says:

I agree that there are still things with Lumia that stop me from whole-heartedly recommending it to friends and family. For example, Lumia 610 might be a great phone for kids, but lacking Angry Birds (not to mention the latest version), Amazing Alex and thigs like that are a big minus there. And Lumia 710 does not have the same appeal. I would, however, recommend Lumia 610 to an older non-tech, basic phone using relative which is good.

On the other hand, for a professional user or tech-enthusiast the lack of WP8 and lack of qwerty models or great cameras are still hindering the thought process. No matter how much *I* like Lumia 900, and I do, I know that not all people change phones like underwear. The WP8 thing will correct itself in a few months time, but I’m still left wondering about cameras and qwerties. It might be well into spring before it is reasonable to expect all these fixed.

So yeah, we can still feel the transition – like we have felt the Nokia transition since 2009 – without perfect options to recommend to a multitude of user types I personally know. So I am reluctant to recommend Lumia to anyone other than tech-entusiasts that change phones often and those that only need a good basic touch-phone and are not concerned about cameras, qwerties, games or the like.

        • Bloob says:

          Agreed.

I hope Nokia stops putting sub-standard cameras in their high end. I can understand bad cameras in QWERTY phones though.

          • migo says:

Why have bad cameras in QWERTY phones? That’s always been a problem with Nokia, you’d hope that they’d kick it entirely.

            • Bloob says:

Because otherwise they’d be even thicker. Of course, if they can put in a good camera, a good qwerty, and not make the phone thicker than E7, then I’ll be running to the store. I don’t think it’s possible though.

    • Janne says:

Definitely, I recently heard some children of relatives discussing what is the hottest phone in the pre-teen segment (in their peer group) and Samsung Galaxy Gio came up as the most wanted thing. On the other hand, I’ve heard kids discussing Lumia with enthusiasm too in department stores – and I’d wager Lumia 610 is selling to quite a few kids too.

In any case: Three things are clearly in effect on those lists, overall strength of Samsung is one of course (the halo effect from other electronics too), Samsung Galaxy S III launch and Nokia’s WP8 transition eating into their high-end. Yet, we can see Lumia 610 sustaining which is promising. But no doubt, Nokia needs to play big and play well with WP8.

  3. Mikka says:

Might get the Galaxy S3. Can’t wait anymore for Jolla’s phone. Windows Phone is as shitty as iPhone.

    • Shane says:

It’s been about 1-2mth since we 1st heard about Jolla phones.
And even then they’ve always maintained they’re only announcing something before the EOTY, not releasing it.
Not exactly a patient man are you????

  4. John says:

Great news that the N9 makes the top 15? Errr Why/how?

  5. Joris Bos says:

Did you guys see the NOK stock? Omg, it’s now like 50% higher than last week! What is happening?

    • lordstar says:

Preppin for Nokia world! Hehe I have high hopes for that.

    • arts says:

The worst is over maybe? I got a feeling it will take a hit when q3 results are out.

      • Luisito says:

Not… Atleast not at all… this has more to do with rumors… you need to look for the nexts weeks to see if the recovery is real or just speculatiosn about a posible Takeover

    • Janne says:

There is also a market-rumor that Lenovo might bid for Nokia, which is upping the stock.

An acquisition being of course Nokia’s largest risk to independence, not bankrupcy.

      • Bloob says:

There was also WP8 leak, there was the realization that July was good for WP, and NSN made a huge deal.

      • Joris Bos says:

Not gonna happen, don’t believe it.

        • Bloob says:

It can’t happen, not after the board bought more shares. Insider trading laws and all that.

          • Janne says:

I know that what Finnish media is commenting… But why not? If Nokia’s management wasn’t aware of the bid and the bid was hostile, there would be nothing stopping it (other than owners not selling or anti-competitive officials saying no).

Nevertheless, Lenovo has now denied the rumor. For what it’s worth.

    • Maybe says:

That’s good all the current phone will have price drop especially after Nokia World. So that people have more Nokia option at lower price.

  6. ms.nokia says:

maybe the short sellers/manipulators have finished their games,
some have said its a dead cat bounce or a short squeeze as investors buy the stock to close out their short trades,
others say that investors now see that the company does have a future and is not at risk of collapse,
there has also been insider purchases of the stock, investors love hearing that,
investors have turned cold on apples results but where surprised by nokia’s Q2 performance,
and ms has been getting positive reviews for metro,
nokia could end up having a bigger stock turnaround than apple inc.
yesterday nokia stocks had 3 times the average turnover, right now in pr-market its up 14%,
i just wish i had more money to buy :(

  7. Sonny says:

So what can we expect for nokia world? A nokia with wp8 but without a 41mp pv cam?

Honestly if they dont bring that cam too wp i dont know how they gonna differientiate

    • Janne says:

Although I too am hoping for a fast-track delivery of 41+ Mpix PureView Lumia magic, I’m not sure that is such a big priority for Nokia as far volume markets are concerned.

The problem with 808 PureView is the size. It probably would mean considerably less sales even in Windows Phone 8 form. Even though the size isn’t anything an enthuasiast can’t handle, it is big as far as normal market expectations go these days.

I think Noka needs halo-products like a 41 (or more) Mpix Lumia, but they also need to hit a sweet spot to go for the volume sales they so desperately need for Lumia. I don’t think current technology makes 41 Mpix that sweet spot.

Considering that N8 was hitting quite a sweet spot, taking things from there might be a good way for Nokia. Perhaps a 18-21 Mpix sensor, N8-like optics, maybe a small camera-bulge (but not a big phone)… The N8 is already way better than most current competition, adding new sensor and algorithm magic to that might take the cake for Nokia.

Nokia N8 already used a predecessor of the PureView algorithm in lossless 720p 2x video zooming from 12 Mpix, so a 18-21 Mpix PureView sensor with video output and 3/5 Mpix PureView modes would still benefit from zooming and oversampling to a noticeable extent.

Other ways to differentiate: unique Nokia design, accompanying software, services (Nokia Music, augmented reality, Reading whatnot)…

Or so I speculate at least…

p.s. My own estimation that a smaller PureView might come from Nokia at launch or in the first months after launch. A 41+ Mpix PureView Lumia I’d say spring 2013 earliest, maybe later? Just my guesswork.

      • Sonny says:

so its better for me to go with the 808 then because im due for an upgrade now and im not gonna wait 5 more months for half of a 808 cam to come to WP8

        • Luisito says:

If you are just after the camera and don’t care about zillios of apps or no care about apps at all… then you must go… everything point out that WP8 PV at the same level won’t come this year… probably late 2013Q1….

        • Janne says:

Sonny, if you just want a great camera on a phone and WP doesn’t matter to you, go with the 808.

OTOH, if Nokia launches WP8 next month, waiting until then to see what exactly they launch with probably won’t hurt you.

      • Epsoo says:

“The problem with 808 PureView is the size. It probably would mean considerably less sales…”

        Ground reality:

        http://nokiagadgets.com/2012/08/01/nokian-808-pureview-would-be-top-seller-in-finland-if-nokia-could-make-them-fast-enough/

        • Janne says:

Perhaps in Finland, to some extent, but while I personally don’t consider the size a problem – I can see why it would have a hard time competing for volume markets. Phones this big are probably niche products now…

Hey, I’d love to be proven wrong. And the banana shaped Lumia PureView 41 Mpix leak showed one way to hide the size. :)

All eyes on the Apple vs. Sammie lawsuit. The judge is mad, madder at Sammie for press releases. If Apple wins this, then could Nokia go after Sammie on their 710 copy?

Sammies washing machine division took a hit for price dumping in the U.S. Big tariff adjustment.

  12. Sonny says:

Why cant nokia make a wp8 808? I mean the same cam and same body? Dont wp8 have the processing power now for a pv sensor?
