StuffMagazine on the Nokia 808 PureView.
Here’s Lucy Hedges from the UK StuffMagazine giving a quick review of the Nokia 808 PureView. Whilst you might stop listening once the disappointment of Symbian is mentioned, Lucy gives PureView quite a good explanation. Much better than I had expected.
- Whilst overall pleased with the camera, ‘no denying the quality of these snaps’, Lucy mentions that it’s a shame there isn’t better image stabilisation.
- Camera UI wise is apparently over complicated outside of auto. (I can sort of agree, there’s some further refinement that could be done.)
- Camera wise, it’s next gen stuff but else where is less impressive.
- S^3 apparently feels like an older version of Android – but feels unfinished, refusing to respond with glitches never far away.
- Music brilliant, music player buggy.
- Browsing sluggish, text rendering jagged on nHD
- Bright colourful screen
- Thick phone
- Pro for HDMI and NFC
- If you thought the megapixel race was over, think again.
Here’s where I’ll disagree hugely. Apparently it would be unlikely that you’d use the 808 in preference of a compact camera? Seriously, you mean the compact cameras that the 808 demolishes to the point it has to stand against DSLRs to really see how far 808 can be pushed?
- Super modern camera bolted on remarkably outdated OS.
- Same comment as all other reviewers – they want this camera in a Lumia. Shame Nokia’s too slow to get this done in time, eh.

“Camera UI wise is apparently over complicated outside of auto.”
I havent found it so, but then ive been brought up with more complex SLRs.
light meters and so forth.
“S^3 apparently feels like an older version of Android – but feels unfinished, refusing to respond with glitches never far away.”
Glitches??
“it’s a shame there isn’t better image stabilisation.”
Ive seen some have had difficulty with the Auto Mode. Not focusing properly before snapping. I dont use auto and almost always use the touch screen method of Focusing.. Although 34mp is a little more difficult.
Completely agree, and have a similar background (ever used rangefinders?)
The camera UI is incredibly good – at the basic level its easy for people to use, and those who are inclined can dig into more detailed configuration.
Overall UI has no glitches, or at least no more glitches than I’ve experienced on Android up to ICS.
And the camera has practically replaced my DSLR unless I’m needing to do some seriously good portraits (low light imaging with a 50mm F1.8 is gorgeous) or need the zoom (28-300, very practical range). For everything else I’m exclusively using the 808.
ive an issue in which i’ll get a green square saying everything is in focus but in actuality nothing is focused it annoys the hell out of me
and i may have something in focus but then want to zoom in on it the moment it zooms it suddenly goes from a pristine sharp image to a blurry smudge
She doesn’t know what she is talking about.. standard.
wait, that came out wrong.. when it comes to the 808 that is.. hha
i’m upset that so many sales are being lost with tech blogs reporting that people should wait for a pv lumia,
and i’m excited in my anticipation of huge future lumia pv sales,
now if only nokia and ms would make it happen asap…this year……if only.
non of the blogs really know what they are talking about, most of these blogs are clueless. If I am a consumer looking to buy a new phone, a blog is the last place I would take advice from…
ms.nokia – Why? These blogs are there to advise their readers. Considering Symbian’s future (which is ‘none’), the price tag on this device, the dull Nokia Store, and overall ecosystem for all Symbian devices, why wouldn’t blogs advise to wait for a Lumia PV?
Now…If you meant that sales will be lost for WP Pureview, assuming that WP PV will not be available in Q4 2012, then understandable; but the Lumia WP8 devices even without Pureview will offer a great user experience with a thriving app store, and growing ecosystem; so still a win for consumers.
All in all, consumers are there to weigh their options as well as the opinions of tech bloggers. There will still be a small subset of individuals that will purchase the 808 regardless.
How much Pureview costs?
Take 808 – 701 = 306€. I don’t know what WP8 phones cost, but I bet there is not going to be WP8 with Pureview, unless its not SEVERELY gimped, or cost ca. 1000$.
Therefore, I would be willing to bet the first WP PV phone will not cost anywhere close to a US$1000.
Yes. Of course. Simplified example is there just to show what obvious.
Its clearly very expensive component, and according to Nokia it self, you won’t find exactly the same Pureview in WP8.
1) what is not obvious though is that a WP even with exactly the same pv tech would cost anywhere near a grand.
2) one would hope indeed that it is not the exact same and that the massive hump cam be made a bit smaller.
Tak…So what? Only *you* care if WP8 will have a 41mp sensor! WP fans are only concerned with the Pureview technology – it’s going to be good whether it is 20mp or 41mp, and will best all other camera phones (with the exception of the 808). The user experience of WP will more than compensate for not having a 41mp sensor!
Try to understand – WP fans don’t care about Symbian; and they don’t care about the the 808 having 41mp sensor. Why? Because it’s Symbian!
try to understand….
pffft
I understand.
wp8 no pureview no purchase

o.o
you should say if there is no nokia wp8 camera better than 808, then no purchase
Any Nokia WP with or without Pureview is better than using a 808 with Symbian.
No Nokia with WP, no purchase!
the megapixel race is over, Nokia just put an end to it. The browser is fine if you turn off auto reload and flash off, even better without java. The music player is not buggy, it works like it should. Symbian feels much better than andro 2.3 on similar hardware.
how to turn them off? step by step guide please?
Open the web browser
1. Settings -> General -> Java/EMCA Script -> Disabled
2. Settings -> Page -> Load Content -> Images (No Flash)
3. Settings -> Page -> Automatic Reload -> Off
All you are left with is something stuck between Opera Mini and Opera Mobile. To be honest, I only use the stock browser because it has better javascript support than Opera. In all other cases, I prefer Opera Mini. The Flash Lite 4.0 isn’t worth it since you can just play videos with CuteTube.
really want nokia N9 with PureView.
“Focus is equivalent to 3x but easily beaten by any compact camera” ? Yeh, right, whatever
thats one thing that sucks about these reviewers they dont really understand what they’re talking about which doesnt make sense since that’s their job…
Stupid girl, she just repeats the same disappointing Symbian Mantra instead of really using the phone. If you check the Amazon comments you´ll see most of the owners like this phone. I´m one of those happy customers!
.
It’s a great camera. It would have been even better if it didn’t have the Symbian OS. Most people seem to be praising the camera while considering the Symbian OS buggy and uncompetitive.
It’s true that Symbian was probably the only platform supporting the PureView effect and the large sensor. It’s also true that Symbian’s reputation is killing the sales of the 808. The availability of the 808 is great compared to some truly great products of the competition. You can get an 808 in less than a week.
There was a time when you were not able to get a truly great product from the competition in less than a month. That was not a problem for the competition. The competition was able to sell a vast amount of handsets while Nokia is selling only a fraction of that while the availability is so much better.
Nokia is not selling 808 handsets because the consumers consider Symbian as a piece of crap. It’s sad because there could have been some nice marketing hype for the PureView effect and the large sensor. This all is ruined because of Symbian’s bad reputation.
What a lot of these reviewers seem to forget is that not everybody has the same desires/values as they do ! I want a phone that makes and receives calls with a high degree of clarity, can handle all my texts and mail and has a good music player, (the best available mobile phone camera is a brilliant bonus). I am well aware that not everybody applies the same criteria in their assessments as I do
There are some phones out there which are more or less high speed computers – not what I need but good luck to those who do, I think its a bit ignorant to take it for granted that the mobile phone using public are all turned on by toys and gimmicks – as I said it may be for some but not for me. The last point of my rant is that the big providers have made an error in judgement by not supplying the 808 on contract, they appear to making the same misguided assessment as the reviewers so good luck to them ! Rant over…
It’s Nokia’s error in pricing the thing too high.
Operators don’t want to carry Symbian devices any more because they don’t want the hassle of dealing with disgruntled customers returning phones.
“Does it support App A?” “No.”
“Can I join my friends on Platform B?” “No.”
“Can I share stuff using Service C?” “No.”
“Then what the hell does it do?” “It takes great pictures!”
Your requirements fall more towards the niche end of the market, whereas most consumers would prefer a more well-rounded smartphone platform.
For the same price you could get a Galaxy S3 instead, and that has a ton more apps and better support than poor old EOL-ed Symbian. The 808 is an awesome camera grafted on to an outdated smartphone platform. Don’t get me started on issues with the web browser (turn off everything to make it work properly? really?), music player (can’t even support tags for multiple discs), email client (stupid single Exchange account, broken IMAP support), stuff with Android and iOS users take for granted.
All the tech blogs wanting Pureview on WP8 is because there’s a future with that platform.
My 701 has no bug or whatsoever…. So don’t blame it on Belle Fp1, blame it on the 808, I had a brief hands-on with one last week & It’s quite laggy… Transitions take forever & the owner complained about restarts…. A 701 with Belle Fp1 is as snappy as a Galaxy S2, and it’s browser handles heavy pages quite well with flash turned off, I also play high bit-rate flash videos on so many sites apart from youtube….. As for youtube, I use the HTML5 link or Cutetube. The music player is excellent & it’s music output is superb!!! Dolby Headphone Technology is awesome… Although the way music’s arranged isn’t too neat, but it’s okay… From the comments I see on this blog everyday, it seems like a bunch of you still use s60v3,5 & 256mb RAM Symbian Devices… Get a 700 or 701, they are currently the best Symbian devices performance-wise… An 808 is just a buggy rushed product.
An updated E7 with the 700/701′s internals would be perfect. Any news if such a beast exists?
