Nokia and Microsoft holding Nokia Lumia event in New York, Sept 5th?

| August 15, 2012 | 53 Replies

Running concurrent with Nokia World in Helsinki it seems – Nokia is also holding another event on September 5th with Microsoft in New York to detail their latest in joint phone efforts

http://allthingsd.com/20120815/aiming-to-precede-new-iphone-nokia-and-microsoft-schedule-sep-5-event/

This, on top of the news earlier today sounds as if we’re definitely going to see a new Lumia announced this year. If it is September, hopefully Nokia will have learnt to get it on the store shelves ASAP.

Whilst the Helsinki thing seems to be something more formal, this appears to be an event for the press.

Cheers muerte for the tip

  1. Janne says:

    There is no special relationship.

HTC will launch WP8 before Nokia.

    /s

    • BellGo says:

I don’t think that Nokia will launch their device significantly before Samsung or HTC, they will also bring out new WP 8 devices pretty much as soon as they can.

And I can’t really think of anything with the MS Nokia relationship that would in any way justify going with WP only. (which is what you seem to be implying)

That is at least my opinion.

      • Janne says:

No, I’m not implying anything about the sanity of going WP only. That was Nokia’s call. For all I know, MeeGo would have been good. Or a combo.

All I’m saying is that, yes, there is a special relationship that some have disputed. Nokia was the only OEM on stage at the first WP8 preview and now a joint press conference… However, is that relationship enough to offset the downsides? History will tell.

        • Maybe says:

          Nokia an OEM for Microsoft…
From a full smartphone maker transform into a full OEM for Smartphone…
          That’s a great achievement of all time…

          • Keith too says:

A full smartphone maker that was on the fast track to bankruptcy to the premier OEM for the most compelling mobile OS on the planet. Yes as long as WP is a success for Nokia, that was a massive achievement and one I wish RIM would have made as well.

            • Luisito says:

Who know… Maybe RIM can succed on their own, The big public will have the last word… Remenber RIM still has a worty user base waiting for the BB 10 OS devices

        • lordstar says:

I think a combo would have been good, they could have tested what the market wanted either windows phone or meego but yeah maybe there were some clauses with the nokia microsoft deal.

  2. viipottaja says:

    EXCELLENT!!

    • Janne says:

Did you guys notice the big Nokia Maps logo as well as the large Nokia Lumia logo…

Joint press conference, maybe there will be location, location, location as well. :)

      • Matija says:

Did you notice wrong WP logo?

        • Janne says:

I did. Are you placing some significance on it?

          • meh says:

Maybe they demo wp 7.8? :P

            • Janne says:

While not impossible, I’d say that would be pretty darn stupid of them. :)

              • Matija says:

                I think it’s a stupid mistake, nothing more. :)

                • Janne says:

That, or just using the current logo because it is the current logo. We agree, it just doesn’t sound plausible this event is about WP7. Most likely it will be WP8 Lumia news.

OTOH, the Nokia Maps logo probably doesn’t hint too much either, apparently it is an interactive element of the invite showing the location of the event. Doh. :)

Of course it is possible that the event is about something other than WP8 Lumias, but I think they’d be pretty stupid to hype up something else like this. (On the other hand, given Nokia’s past of overpromising and underdelivering…)

            • sunnyvale says:

That was specifically and strategically put there to troll the hell out of Janne, so he can start a huge well-versed, vocabulary enriched paragraph about his thoughts.

just kidding Janne. I like reading you comments.

      • jiipee says:

        Hey mr Location!

From purely professional point of view: what sources do you know that give the best information on the Where platform? I remember reading some developer/partner article, which I vaguely remember containing usefull info. Well, at least a lot more insightful than the Conversations articles ;)

    • EagleEye says:

      INDEED!

  3. Svedu says:

Ok. So very soon media will again speculate that Microsoft will buy Nokia and that they are holding a press-event sep 5:th to announce it officially. The list of candidates in recent history has been long: Microsoft, Facebook, Samsung, Huawei, Microsoft again, Lenovo and now Microsoft for a third time (+ maybe some more in between). S&P downgrade today to try to get the value of the stock down a bit, tomorrow new speculation of buy-out to get the price up. It seems somehow familiar.

    • twig says:

You notice it happens always right before earnings or a Nokia event too? ZDNet, with their Apple stickers on their foreheads, are freaking out about Surface price. Zerohedge showed a lot of hedge funds jumped into Apple on the dip. This Micro/Nokia partnership could crush many hedge funds.

  4. ms.nokia says:

please be new hardware and not just software

  5. prashant says:

So two events at two different locations and more excitingly they are on the same day.

    • Muerte says:

The most obvious reason for this arrangement is, that Nokia (and MS) wants to get the most out of their announcements.

      1) Introduce the international versions @ Helsinki Nokia World
      2) Introduce the US versions for Verizon, Sprint, AT&T and T-mob @ NY

      • Janne says:

        Solid logic, sounds plausible.

What’s most promising in my opinion about this news is that we now have a confirmed *press* event for September 5th.

There was always the off chance that the invite only Helsinki Nokia World(ish) event of September 5th – 6th would have not resulted in any public announcements until October or something.

I think it is now safe to say there will be public announcements on September 5th about (at least some of the) Nokia World news.

      • sunnyvale says:

So, what do you think? Elop could be in either of those events.

Due to Nokia’s past references about trying to make a strong presence in the US Market, there’s a fair chance (and we can assume) of Elop being in the USA events, instead of Finland.

        • Janne says:

Just a guess: since the Finland event is a two day invite only (private?), maybe Elop is in New York for the public event and will speak to Helsinki via video and/or will fly to Finland for day 2 for meetings with partners.

OTOH, having the New York event in the middle of those two days (when considering timezones) suggests they probably aren’t trying for any fancy philcollinsey Atlantic crosses mid-event. So depending on how small or big either of the events is, anything can happen.

Do we know for certain the Helsinki event of 5.-6. is still on?

          Good question.

          • sunnyvale says:

I was thinking exactly about the live video streaming before writing my comment. But now that you mention about the Finland event being private, it could be a live streaming to Finland, from the USA event.

Still, I do not see a reason that could impede Elop of quickly flying over to Finland for the event in the aforementioned location. Well…the only reason would be event delays or re-scheduling.

          • Shaun says:

Surely Elop will be in his super-villain island bunker stroking a white cat?

    • Viipottaja says:

Yeah, I think they have had similar parallel event arrangements sometimes in the past too, with one in London and another in Hong Kong on the same day, for example.

    • shyne says:

I think its just about Nokia map integration demo on WP8 thats it..!!

  6. Adnan says:

They really shouldn’t bother announcing new handsets if they can’t have them on shelves within two weeks. Also Nokia and Microsoft better have something amazing to wow everybody and get them in line to buy a WP8 lumia

  7. Janne says:

This news has been approved by Wall Street.

For the next fifteen minutes at least. ;)

  8. Cod3rror says:

If they don’t announce a WP8 with PureView they should just cancel the whole event. Everything else will be unimpressive.

Either way a week after that the new iPhone will be announced and Nokia and Microsoft will be washed away by the avalanche or articles and mindshare the iPhone is going to get.

    • twig says:

I got 3, yes 3, updates today for the Nokia 900 in the u.s. Camera, email, payment through marketplace, flip phone to silence, sim transfers, windows stuff and Nokia stuff. Sounds like I got Tango ++. Love this phone. Came through Zune.

  9. Luisito says:

More close to see if the taken decisions were right…

  10. Jody / buzzonme says:

Honestly, i feel nervous everytime msft and nokia announce an event together. It is as if the enivitable will happen…… :(

  11. twig says:

The verge just trashed the new Samsung Galaxy Note 10in.while liking the windows 8. One down, one to go.

  12. Yemi says:

Am i the only one that noticed how crisp the tile edges are in the pic? High def screen coming?

    • manu says:

ya the phone demoed at wp summit had high resolution screen.so its coming but id like to see a larger screen 4.6~ 4.8inch.4.3 inch is a bit small for 2012.

      • pablo says:

you mean that by 2016…. 6″ would be the norm? Buy an ipad with 3G and there u have, larger screen.

4.3″ is enough, we’re talking about a phone for jesus christ!

        • lordstar says:

Different tastes different phones. Hopefully I get to see a 4inch max n9 type body phone running windows 8.

Not everyone’s thinking that a bigger screen is better. Hopefully we will be catered to as well.

  13. Hary says:

Why is there a “?” in the title?

  14. Vedhas Patkar says:

just realized Nokia has events in Finland and USA the same day. Hope its not the takeover

    • Viipottaja says:

It is not, don’t worry. The whimsical nature of the invite alone points at a product and/or software announcement.
