Stephen Elop: Nokia Windows Phone 8 launching ‘soon’.

| August 15, 2012 | 73 Replies

Reuters reports that Stephen Elop said Windows Phone 8 from Nokia will be launched soon.

This should quell some rumours and comments that suggest Nokia will not be announcing any new Lumia WP8s this year. Similar rumours cropped up last year after doubts on whether Nokia could release a WP7.5 device so soon (when they generally took 18 months to get anything out).

However, for those who still have doubts, they are warranted in their concern due to past Nokia mistakes:

  • Soon. This has no actual time frame and differs from person to person. To Nokia, soon may be 6 months or more. They’ve been a lot more cautious in using that word, particularly for the disappointment it ensues.
  • Launching this year could still not mean any phones are available this year. We are in mid August. We have, September, October, November, and December left. Should we see at the earliest, a September launch, it’s not very un Nokia like not to exceed 6 months until they have the phone on the shelves.

Where we can have some hope is that Nokia repeats or betters the launch seen with the Nokia Lumia 800. I.E. Have it shipping on the day of launch, possibly on shop markets in weeks. Since Nokia most likely has been working on WP8 concurrently with WP7, they should also have had much more time to iron out any major bugs.

Cheers anon for the tip!

    ” it’s not very un Nokia like not to exceed 6 months until they have the phone on the shelves.”

    Very true.

    It’s not impossible though they are no more in a position to do so.

    Still it’s a very good news. Hope we will see a Windows Phone 8 running Nokia ‘soon’. Nokia need to come with smart pricing and solid specs as the rumor says samsung is coming with something big(WP8).

  2. Alvester says:

    ‘Soon’…I see what you did there.

  3. Mark says:

    In before usual anti Elop diatribes.

    Still, I’ll beleive it when I see it. It needs to be out early to mid Q4.

    • jiipee says:

      Why are you always expecting the worst and being negative ;) I cant see any anti Elop comments here…

      Ofcourse the devices are out well before Christmas as long as WP is ready to ship. Another matter is, what Nokia specific features are on board in the first wave and what are updated later.

  4. Pashara Pershervara says:

    The good news is that Nokia N9 at last is coming to India. Something must be in sell to cover W8 expenses and this is good for India people.

  5. No matter windows phone os is more user friendly,fluid,fast but microsoft together nokia should work on price or cost of mobile.At least it should come in price of nokia 500 and below it..

  6. nn says:

    - Launching this year with availability this year, but only on few markets and product that isn’t finished and/or polished.

  7. ggg says:

    no purebiew, you cant dream of getting my money

  8. N-tice says:

    @ Pashara Pershervara: Can mention source regarding your claim if n9 in india. Do you know by when ll it launch officially.

  9. Paul says:

    My speculation:

    WP8-Launch will take place in 3 weeks.
    WP8-Sale will start in Oct.
    WP8-PureView will come @MWC 2013.

    I don’t see the point in launching at the same time as the iPhone… iPhone 5 will totally steal the show from Sept to Dec as it seems to bring a lot of changes compared to the previous launch (iPhone 4S). WP8′s only slim chance was beginning of this year (2012) but they passed it. Microsoft and Nokia should get ready to get smoked by iPhone.

    Note: I am not a fan of either iPhone or WP but since Microsoft/Nokia decided to play on Apple’s grounds they should know the rules of the game.

    • Paul says:

      If a product is ready, you have to launch it and not waiting for sunshine. But you can’t launch a product if it is not ready.

      • AlsoCan says:

        The mistake is not in launching it but in strategizing/planning it. WP wants to fight iOS but it is at least 2 generations behind and the gap is increasing.
        Solution: you either choose to not fight on Apple grounds (like Android did) or you deliver products as innovative/trendy/desirable as Apple’s. These are at least 3 adjectives that could never be applied to Microsoft in their entire history.

        • ms.nokia says:

          have u seen the surface tablets and touch covers?

          • guerrahp says:

            If the Surface was ready they would had everybody playing with them at the announcement. The surface is soo not ready. Heck did they even demo the touch covers???

        • Paul says:

          I don’t want to discuss which OS is ahead or behind.

          Apple launches usually every year something during summer. So you have always to compete with that.
          I bet the timeframe for the launch of WP( (e.g. H2/2012) was planned maybe two years ago. How should they know when exacly Apple plans to launch something?

          This year Appple is late again.
          iPhone = Jan 2007 (Start)

          iPhone3G = July 2008 (Summer)
          iPhone3GS = June 2009 (Summer)
          iPhone4 = June 2010 (Summer)

          iPhone 4S = Oct 2011 => against ICS-Launch?

          iPhone 5 = Sept 2012? => against WP-launch?

          To me it looks like Apple changed their launch dates to compete with the others.

    • ms.nokia says:

      if the rumours are true about the next iphone, then this is a perfect time for nokia to release new wp8 devices and catch some tired iphone users not willing to buy another iphone4 look-a-like.
      and who says nokia must play to apple’s rules or game?
      it’s time for a change.

    • Just Visiting says:

      If iPhone is going to be in the spotlight for the timeframe you state, then why should ANY oem (LG, Motorola, etc., whether Android or WP) release a device during this time?

      Manufacturers have to sell devices; iPhone will ALWAYS outsell every other single device on the market, at any time, as they continue to prove year after year, quarter after quarter; so Nokia and WP releasing a device now, or in Q1 2013, isn’t going to change anything – they will sell devices, but not volume that the iPhone does.

  11. JD! says:

    What is Elop smiling on in the picture above?

    Smiling at how he demolished Nokia? Or coz he is listening Balmer’s congratulation message for demolishing Nokia?

  12. Prasenjit Singh Bist says:

    The first Windows Phone 8 based second generation Nokia Lumia devices will be available in Q4 very soon after they launch in september.

    One more news is that there’s something big coming for Symbian, but I am not fully sure.

    i don’t think apple iphone 5 will steal the thunder and u will see why…
    too bad for apple crowd

    • lordstar says:

      Something big coming for Symbian? I thought the 808 was the last device?

    • manu says:

      i highly doubt about something big coming for symbian especially considering fact that how nokia scares devs away from the platform.

      • skyfall says:

        Elop’s strategy has always been to test new technology and new features on other platforms(Meego,symbian) as a beta test and then introduce it on windows phone so the first ever blandable display Nokia phone could be symbian based LOL

      • Jill says:

        he means to say Belle FP2 .. but that is not something very big right ?

      • JGsmartypants says:

        Does Nokia scare them away, or the crappiness of the platform scare them away?

        • Shaun says:

          Both. Why would devs trust a company that changes it’s strategy more often than the CEO changes his underpants?

  13. ms.nokia says:

    “relatively near term” … elop
    thats worse than soon.
    if its not widely available by late september, then kiss the holiday quarter goodbye :(

  14. BellGo says:

    What matters more is what they will launch, not when. If they will simply launch a Lumia that is the same as 900, but has slightly better specs then I don’t see any reason for the sales to grow a lot. Something really great needs to come out..

  15. bbb says:

    jolla will steal the show

  16. MeeGo says:

    That picture proves that Ali is a Windows Phone paid poster.

  17. Tech says:

    like they are said ”just keep your eyes open for the next month”

  18. I thought the main delays to Nokia getting phones on shelves were sometimes software related, and that is something they don’t have to worry about developing now, so hopefully should speed things up.
    I think by end of November at the latest new WP8 Nokia phones should be in shops.

  19. saad says:

    A lot of people may not like this but i kinda think that Elop despite all the bad moves he took is a couple of years ahead of his thinking ,he knows what he’s doing hopefully , he could bring the company back on it’s feet .

    • gordonH says:

      +1
      Elop does know how to move and plan. Soon, we’ll all be seeeing ELOP bring MS back on it’s feet.

      • Saad.T says:

        let’s just hope they deliver some high-end devices in september rather then play catch-up & what scares me the most is the other companies especially samsung that might deliver some bulked up phones and steal the show from nokia once again , even in the windows phone territory which is nokia’s last chance at proving itself .
