Viber: Voice Calls Exclusive to Lumia Phones; Also comes to Nokia S40, Symbian

| September 11, 2012 | 35 Replies

WPCentral have posted up that Viber has announced they will bring Voice Calling to Windows Phone, exclusive to the Lumia range. This is another prime example of Nokia improving the WP experience for Lumia users. Although, I do think that having such exclusive apps and services does indeed cause fragmentation, but let’s not discuss that.

Going to the source link, you find out that they will also be releasing a version for S40 and Symbian. Great news for Nokia on all fronts.

Here is what they announced;

Nokia S40, Symbian and Bada Platforms

The new version features Viber’s popular text messaging service. The app is being released to the popular S40, Symbian and Bada platforms that power hundreds of millions of mobile devices around the world. More than 1.5 billion phones using the Nokia S40 platform have been sold since the platform was first released. These new platforms represent a huge and untapped market for Viber and allow the startup to provide even more people with the ability to communicate freely.

Viber for Windows Phone 7 on Nokia Devices

Viber is also releasing a completely new version for Nokia Lumia phones running the Windows Phone 7 platform. Viber now offers Nokia Windows Phone 7 users free HD-quality phone calls and group messaging in addition to free text and photo messages. This version was developed in partnership with Nokia and is currently available exclusively on Nokia Lumia phones.

“We are committed to our users and to our mission – to let people all over the world connect freely,” said Talmon Marco, CEO of Viber Media. “By adding the S40, Symbian and Bada platforms to our list of supported mobile OSs, we are expanding the community of individuals who can communicate for free, no matter what platform they use.”

This is good news for the end users. On the other hand operators will not like this and operators are urgently needed to sell the phones. Free voice and IM clients are already available in many flavors for some time. I guess Nokia would not dare to push such apps and advertise with it.

  2. pig_benis says:

    where to download it?

why bothering ? without voice call viber means nothing !!!

It seems that no more update for skype on symbian.

Is it avaikablr now for symbian!

  4. migo says:

I don’t mind if it’s a timed exclusive, if Lumia users get a 3 month head start on it, that’s fine. On the other hand, if only Lumia users get it, anyone who bought a non-Lumia WP ends up feeling shafted and is more likely to jump platforms entirely. Other manufacturers might also feel it’s not worth using WP anymore, like how Samsung decided to leave Symbian when Nokia made it impossible for non-Nokia Symbian devices to compete.

  5. Yaseen says:

I think it has along time since viber team says that the viber will support symbian and s40 , more than a year I guess :/

    but nothing !

Hmmmmm we will see this time ^_^
hope it will be based on Qt :)
    thanx

  6. Oliver says:

Go and ask them about MeeGo support.

  7. Rahul says:

With these exclusive deals, it would be no surprise to see Nokia render the other WP manufacturers useless. Even at this point, there is no point in buying a non-Lumia and windows phone and the situation is not going to change in the future. If Windows Phone can find a market share in the region of 15-20% Nokia can become viable again in the smartphone range. I just don’t see that happening.

Oh, and would have loved to see it on Nokia N9.

  14. hhh says:

  15. aslanoo says:

App is totally crap. Bad programmers or what happened the whole last year

  16. MoritzJT says:

Wondering how anyone nowadays even dares releasing an app sub native UI standard. WTF

Using QML ain’t that hard. At least make the UI look like 2012 not 2007. This is seriously retarded. No one needs it in this rudimentary form.

They should seriously overhaul it and give the full featureset to Symbian too. Or not support it at all. I’m so fed up with this half arsed stuff :-/

Bluetooth file transfer, and much more, coming to current Lumia devices via Nokia’s coming updates. Please check the article from Nokia Conversations for further details. :)

  18. zafar says:

Damn …. No voice call. The bad UI makes it even worse. Let’s hope they provide calling feature in their next update.

  19. s3m44 says:

That’s really the end, goodbye Symbian!

    http://labs.qt.nokia.com/2012/09/11/qt-creator-2-6-0-beta-released/

Qt Creator now support Android, but drop the support for Symbian…

These new supported target platforms are unfortunately shadowed a bit by the fact that we also had to drop Symbian support because of missing maintainer.

  20. gordonH says:

Nice try viber… but symbian users need voice too!!!
Maybe poor coders at your place.

  21. Chen Zhe says:

for mobile messaging, I’d recomend Youlu Address Book, the smoothest hybrid (text+internet) messenger for Symbian.

  22. Anirudh says:

Totally unfair.. What is the use of bringing viber without voice calls for symbian S^3 and other Stmbian OSs? We all have got a better appa called whatsapp wid an awesome ui than the released viber texting service. There should be an updatw foe the S^3 users as well:)..

  23. ok whats the matter giving calls in symbian viber. Why not? What will happen.
