Nokia Lumia 920 PureView VS Samsung Galaxy S3 Live, side by side comparison video
Until we get some reviews and hands on units, it’ll be hard to truly know how the Nokia Lumia 920 with PureView performs.
But we can get a gist of what it might be like and we’re slowly getting more demoes released, but mainly from Nokia people with rehearsed moves.
In this video we can see not only the Nokia Lumia 920 but also the SGSIII. Both are strapped to a remote controlled car (so shake is both equal) you can see the car drive around and after both record, we see the playback.
Unfortunately the person doing the test got a little confused as to how to play the videos back on both devices at the same time and at the same point.
Whilst there might be shakes, being on a level toy car already minimised that. But at acceleration, you can see that the SGSIII is shaking heavily up and down, whilst that is not the case on the 920. I’d like to see a like ‘walk’ holding both devices simultaneously but walking.

Hahah funny and effective test!
That is the worst comparison ever!!
Should have had separate runs for each phone and then played the resulting videos side by side! Pointless.
What are you talking about? You can clearly see the differences between the phones? Doing separate runs would make it not fair. Nokia haters than would be complaining that the car drove differently
Yes maybe they would complain but putting the phone in the holder at the same time means they are located in different positions on the car. The 920 is closer to the middle and therefore the more balanced part of the car, people may argue the nokia is at a slight advantage. Then to not play the videos side by side makes it pointless.
Just my two cents.
FWIW, I’m 100% buying a Lumia 920, just like to see fair tests.
Yeah, and the Lumia is heavier and therfor far more stable. /s
Seriously? The 920 CAMERA is closer to the middle ??? THAT’s the argument now?
Compare the mounting bracket, left side on the Android video, right side on the 920.
On the Android, the mount bracket is completely stable within the video (ie the camera moves with it).
On the 920 the bracket is shaking like a mofo, meaning the OIS is compensating for it. (Or if you’re a troll, claim the 920 was mounted with suspension and shock absorbers)
What I would do if that was my video, is cut out the crap showing I don’t know how to playback a video
But very nice test otherwise.
“people MAY argue the nokia is at a slight advantage”
If you studied Science at school you would realise that in order to do a fair test that one factor is changed (the phones) and all other variables have to be the same. In this case the positioning of BOTH phones is different and like you point out the brackets react differently for each phone so the test is unfair. Negligible difference but still.
GREAT idea for a test though, just poor execution, I hope these aren’t Nokia guys. Would love to see someone do this again properly, perhaps even outside.
Yeah I dropped out of kindergarten, nice ad hominem.
This is not an objective scientific test, no, if we did that just about every tech blog would be out of business (wishful thinking!).
It’s just ridiculous how this is argued, what’s next, cutting open the camera modules before you believe f2.0 lets in more light than f2.4 ? OIS is not magic, it’s a very simple, and a very well proven concept. People act like it’s witchcraft. Sure, we don’t know for sure how good Nokia’s *implementation* is, but considering the N8, the 808, their experience, and what we’ve seen so far, there’s really no reason to believe it’s just a gimmick.
Or are you arguing the positive effects of OIS in photography/videography are not understood or somehow in question?
The implementation may suck, sure. But then they’d be crucified because they’d have had to fake just about every test and hands-on, in front of whorenalists already looking for any excuse to bash it because it’s not running their favourite OS, and knowing full well it will be tested independently after release.
And I did not point out that the bracket reacts differently, I point out that the 920 is compensating very clearly for the bracket shake, which means it is either not attached properly (but coincidentally in a very convenient shock absorbing manner perfectly suited for the type of vibration given by the bracket) or OIS is kicking ass. The Android has the bracked fixed in the viewfinder, which is exactly what a camera without stabilization and rigidly attached to a shaking bracket would show.
Also, “you” is not pointed at you specifically.
I’m not doubting the technology at all! I think OIS is awesome and the 920 overall is awesome, I want Nokia to succeed.
I just want to see the technology shown off in a better / fairer way leaving absolutely no doubt how much better it is than the competition. If I came across that video as a Samsung / Android fan, I would be “meh”.
This technology must work! if it didn’t it would be the end of Nokia! they wouldn’t claim it has this feature if it didn’t work! This Technology exists elsewhere anyway! my Panasonic camcorder has ois! at 46x zoom i get no shake at all. when i turn off its ois you get so much shake its useless! Nokia may have done it in a different way i don’t know! but it works and i am impressed! if only my contract was up i would be getting one of these!
Hahah cmon they would both have lots of vibration anyways.. no matter where the phone is located. The difference is huge and it cannot be just because of location of the phone .)
But true.. they should have edited those 2 videos into 1 video with split screen and it would have been better.
agreed
10+
lumia 920 is the best for me..
Surface might have been too flat to begin with. As you stated.
But in the matter of fact I have seen enough proof that Pureview works. Now we can talk more bullshit before phone release in (too) far future.
I hope Nokia can make serious marketing behind these phones. These really deserve it. I’m seeing too many SGS3 ads in my daily paper…
I think it’s fair to say Image Stabilisation just works on the 920…
Why wouldn’t it?
Please some definitive examples…
you can also hear Lumia 920s rich recording mono output here…
I think it’s pretty clear for even the most skeptic person that OIS really does help significantly with videos and in low light conditions.
Next, I would like to see how much OIS helps the camera to capture detail in sunlight.
It probably makes no difference in sunlight, since the shutter times are short enough already. Even my L610 takes nice pictures in sunlight. Here it comes down to the quality of the camera and software in general. Certainly I hope it will be very very good, but IMO it will not be because OIS specifically.
There might be some tricks they can do to get an HDR effect without needing a tripod, and/or get good results with difficult scenes (very dark in one end and very light in another). Interestingly they list Panorama (HDR) on that flyer thing yesterday
here is another video showing low-light photo comparison between GS3 and L920 by the same uploader.
Wow… nice…. I want that car!!!!
This is much better. Good tests that show that OIS does actually kick in. It’d be nice to see something with even greater shaking just as Jay suggested (I’m pretty sure humans hands do a much worse job than the RC car at times).
Isn’t it quite sad that people other than the nokia folks are doing a better job at promoting the phone? Looks like nokia should provide some of us with jobs helping them with this. Haha.
Gee is the lumia that big next to the s3, it looks smaller in other pics, I know it’s around half a cm shorter but unfortunately way heavier. Come on Nokia announce pricing and availability.
F2.0, OIS, Pureview, NFC, Dual core, 4.5″ supersensitive display, WP8, corning gorilla glass, wireless charging.. .
nobody need them in an unshipped phone.
It’s a good comparison between the two phone. Lumia win because the video shows a very clear difference between the two.
Have the 920 fixed the problem of SMS field such that you send SMS to any of the contact field. Now in the 800 you can send SMS only to the field save under moblle Samsung and iPhone are such that you can send SMS to all the fields in any contactQ
