Rumor: Lumia 820 & 920 To Be Available Mid/Late October?

| September 21, 2012 | 47 Replies

We’ve all heard the previous speculations about the release date of the Lumia range, which now falls either sometime towards the end of October (21st is the word of mouth); and between early November. Of course earlier is always better for us eager fans, which is why I’m hoping the following new tidbit has a grain of truth in it. According to one of our readers “Davide” the Nokia Italy expect to have the new Lumia devices available sometime around Mid/Late October (which would fit in perfectly in the Oct. 21st time-frame). The reason behind this speculation is that the Nokia Italy team are taking a training course about the new devices in the upcoming days; since the devices are ready for “training purposes” I assume that there’s not much left to do besides pack them, ship them and market the hell out of them.

And its probably true. Microsoft, for example, didn’t release the WP8 SDK yet because the SDK also includes a complete emulator of the system, and they want some of the features of WP8 to be revealed ONLY on their WP8 release event, and this is also the reason why no-one got to tinker around with WP8 devices so far.
You can read about it here:
    http://windowsteamblog.com/windows_phone/b/wpdev/archive/2012/09/12/windows-phone-8-sdk-preview-program-is-now-open.aspx

Also note Todd Brix’s comment down there, in the comments section…

    • efekt says:

To clarify, when I wrote “And its probably true” I was referring to the WP8 devices availability date. They’ll be made available right after Microsoft’s official WP8 release event.

  2. Rahms says:

Whenever it does decide to come out it will be too late, the general population will all have iPhone 5′s
This is a big fail to be honest, how are Lumia’s suppose to be the alternative option for people wanting something different other than their iPhone, if the Lumia isn’t even available for purchase.

Its just another fail tbh Most innovations….last to market

It almost makes all the innovation not worth it in the first place

    • SavioR says:

Since the iPhone 5 sold out. New shipments will be available in 3-4 weeks (at&t rep told me this) Nokia needs to push them out in 4 weeks tops! Or else, say goodbye to their sales. I was going to get a 920, but decided I will go for an HTC 8x. I’ll just get an L800 ’cause they’re cheap right now. In a month, ill be able to get one for $100-150. Right now people are selling them for $200 (on Craigslist).

      • Rahms says:

        Why the 8X??
The only thing it has over the 920 is weight and better ffc

        • migo says:

And better ergonomics and looks all around.

        • SavioR says:

8x suits me better. I’m more of a Music and Video buff. HTC + Beats is a win-win for me. 920 looks nice too, but I really don’t care much about a camera. Yes, the weight is what made me change my mind. The 920 looks big and heavy, but then again I will wait and see for myself. For now, my eyes and $ are set on the 8X.

          • Weirdfisher says:

            Beats
            It’s a joke

          • lordstar says:

The 8x has an excellent audio amplifier.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mX-BVdthfE

Any info regarding the sound quality on the Lumia 920??

            • kunwar says:

both the lumia 920 n 820 have dolby

            • SavioR says:

Thanks for the link. Beat me to it.
The last great audio Nokia phone I had was the N8. That thing was loud, and I loved it. N9 & L900 just sucked (audio/speaker dep.)Wasn’t loud enough for me. I actually missed calls too. Im one of those guys that doesn’t carry my phone everywhere. If my phone is in the living room and im in my room, i want to be able to hear it ring. Blackberries, old Nokias, and even iPhone 4, delivered in that department.

          • spitfires says:

Nokia is not just about the Cam… Nokia has always had the best sound quality for playback, best speakers, best audio recording(remember rich recording), FREE MUSIC DOWNLOADS and don’t forget all the great audio accesoires with integrated NFC.
Nokia is generally known for all these skills.

So why would you possibly want to choose HTC over Nokia for audio?
HTC Beats is just a big marketing joke

            • David says:

You sir just stole my words (:

            • SavioR says:

Have you tried the N9 and L900? Speakers just sucked! I’ve also read that the camera wasn’t that great either (but I could care less about a cam)

The last great Nokia phone I had was the N8. That thing blew everything out-of-the-water. Not just that, but the size was perfect too!
I know Nokia is one of the best out there… Thats why I said I will get a Nokia L800 (size is perfect!!!!) for the Nokia Exclusive apps. The 920 is a beaty, but that thing looks too huge! Maybe I’ll skip the l800 and get an unlocked 820. I will wait til they come out.

      • spitfires says:

Nokia audio/sound quality has always been superb and the bigger one over any other smartphone.

    • Webby says:

People who want an iPhone will buy an iPhone.

    • migo says:

People are starting to learn about the debacle of iOS 6 Maps, that’ll seriously cut down on the number of people willing to buy an iPhone 5. Hell, a bunch of current iPhone users will be mighty pissed off when they get upgraded to iOS6 and lose one of the most important features.

  3. rudy says:

Please Nokia release this for T-Mobile, pretty please pretty please.

  4. kanisa says:

Should have been out yesterday, people are buying iPhone 5 and not looking back. I really hope this thing is in the store before christmass, because this is pretty much the all of nothing for WP.

  5. CHRIS says:

If somebody can help me if he/she knows…

If I have a Gmail account with a thousand contacts and each of the contacts have multiple “informations” and phone numbers like, 4 mobiles, 2 general phones, 2 home phones, 2 business mobiles, 2 fax, 6 e-mails and 2 notes, I want to ask you that. What’s the Nokia phone that I can synchronize that mail, to have always my contacts (and calendar I think) synchronized all the time, in order not to transfer my contacts from one to another and to have always a back up! Androids can do that for sure! I think Symbians also, but I’m not sure. Can N9 do this?? I think that Lumia can’t! They told me when I called Nokia calling center that Lumia has only two “seats” for mobiles in each contact and N9 3, but I don’t trust them because they had told me wrong informations before about sth else. They have not been adviced such good. I want to know espesially for N9 or another…

    Thanks!

    • Maybe says:

Well that’s the problem when you’re only OEM company. So you have to wait the OS/software company to launch the OS only then you can launch your products. In term of hardware Nokia excels so congrats being a successful OEM company.

The next person who whines bout availability shall feel the wrath of my thumb!no 1 nokia cant release because wp8 hasnt been launched yet and no2 you cant compare nokia to apple.they create ONE PHONE PER YEAR with minor changes and they are using their own OS.1 freakn year to design 1 lame phone and here we have people yapping about how quickly apple releases devices.

What a bunch of stupid assholes the lot of you are. This has been repeated many times, but i’ll be sure to make it stand out. Ahem:

NOKIA IS NOT THE REASON FOR THEIR NEWEST PHONES HAVING A LATE RELEASE!

MICROSOFT HAS PURPOSELY DELAYED THE RELEASE OF WP8, ITS SDK AND RTM TO OEMS IN AN EFFORT TO BRING WP8 WITHIN THE W8 RELEASE, ASSURE QUALITY OF CODE & WITHHOLD LEAKS OF INFORMATION FROM GETTING TO PRESS!

Nokia is at tje front of the line on this situation, I’m sure the Lumia’s will be first to hit market and the otjer OEMs will price drop to attempt to compete.

One of you mentioned finding Lumia 900 for $200. You don’t think that aluminum ashtray with the glass lid isn’t going to be on craigslist, too? iOS6 is little different from before and Apple’s Maps solution? Not at the level Nokia has had for years, and getting better all the time.

The the man getting the HTC 8X

The the man getting the HTC 8X……why the hell would you bother with that and tell us here?

  12. manu says:

rather than launching a phone with full of bugs now and loosing all reputation its better to launch it a month or so after.
Also 8x seems a decent device especially the price factor which we cant expect from nokia.

  13. Sonny says:

I bet my house that nokia wont release the first WP8 device!

Samsung announced their phones before nokia and has now more time to tune up their devices!

Htc is a suprise as well, them announcing that they are also in a special partnership with Microsoft lets me think why the f$$k cant Nokia release Symbian of Meego devices on the side like Htc and Samsung do with their OneX and S3!

    • Dave says:

“Samsung announced their phones before nokia and has now more time to tune up their devices!”

      Are you seriously this stupid?

      • Sonny says:

Yes I am stupid yes! So tell me why haven’t Nokia announced the release date of the phones or at least the prices? Oh wait some people like you cant stand it when the problem does not lie at Nokia.

Plus the reason why I said Nokia wont release it first is because when was the last time Nokia released something on time? plus on the camera more then one people said that some of the stuff still needs tweaking while Samsung has no such innovation to tweak. their phone is just a S3 with WP8 on it!

Lastly its funny how you came to the conclusion that I’m that stupid because of that one sentence while you completely ignore the other part! Oh wait people like you hate the fact that Nokia could have done way better if they had all WP8,Meego,Symbian! at one time instead of throwing all their eggs in a unproven basket!

        • Cani Lamentoqua says:

It is not only about time. This is also about that all companies will launch their mobiles together and most of them will be almost identical as will use the same exactly windows. So only one which will have the lowest price will be noticed. Why to buy identical (almost) phone, so substitutive good, by more money when one can have the same with lower cost? Microsoft will have the same money from licences – and don’t care from which OEM company. So one who will launch the same product as last one will have a chance to set the lowest price. And sell the biggest volume, so use the effect of scale. This is not so difficult, I’d rather would say easy to understand. And one more: delays of product is in 99% caused by problems of many kinds. Technical, financial, licensing, etc.etc.. There is only 1% of chance it is tactical move with certain purpose. This is rather stopping a fire, then anything else. Perhaps at another platform? (that was irony, to be clear)

          • Sonny says:

What I just cant understand is Nokia killed Meego/N9 because what? it took too long to get out. But now they changed to WP and still there is delays! Why kill an amazing product that was ready for something that still isn’t ready yet. Such a shame really.

I for one will give the l920 a chance seeing that I cant get the 808 on my carrier! but it would be nice if nokia gave us more options! I mean if nokia supported the N9,808 and the lumia ranges they are still Nokia products which Nokia users will like to buy and buy till whatever option is the best in the future

        • Dave says:

Read what you wrote: “Samsung announced their phones before nokia and has now more time to tune up their devices!”

They showed a black-screen device, that they couldn’t turn on, in a 2 minute afterthought to and Android show, one week before Nokia, and you think that gives them “more time” ?? ALL players could have announced their devices already 6 months ago. It means jack shit.

And nobody, outside of those who follow these blogs, cares. Pricing and availability for the 920 will be announced, I am guessing, this coming week. It’ll be in the first wave of WP8 devices.

“Plus the reason why I said Nokia wont release it first is because when was the last time Nokia released something on time?”

So you’re saying that when they had their own OS, they were always late (like the 5 months I waited for the N8, which was still released with shit firmware) ? Well, you’re right. They had a Symbian army the size of Microsoft’s Windows team, and look what that got us.

Regardless of wether it’s announced or not, Nokia’s devices will hit the market the same or before the others. End of october, beginning of November.

  14. JGrove303 says:

He just bet his house on a phone release, so what do you think? He might be stupi, for a living even, but he’s got some balls!

Speaking of balls and gambling, I’d bet my left nut to his house that not only will Samsung not be out of the gate before Nokia, but that Samsung will have done nothing to differentiate it’s device any further than it did for the Focus Flash or S.

  15. mushfiq says:

Nokia is havin dolby surround sound.

  16. El Marko says:

Given the speed with which Nokia normally rolls out new hardware, an Oct/Nov release of the Lumia 920 in Italy will mean the U.S. can expect to see this device next April.

Except, Nokia also likes to cancel handsets. So, it’ll probably be announced in March that the Lumia 920 won’t be released in the U.S. in April.

. . . or maybe the announcement will be that Nokia (desperate to sell anything in the U.S.) has acquiesced to carrier demands and is stripping out the turn-by-turn navigation in Nokia maps and will be crippling the NFC chip. And no unlocked phone will be sold in the U.S.; it’s AT&T or nothing.

Basically, I feel as though we have many, many miles to go before we might know if, when, at what price, and whether the Lumia 920 be available unlocked in the U.S.

Meanwhile, the few of Nokia’s current U.S. customers are still waiting for the Belle refresh to be widely released.
