Video: iPhone 5 vs. Nokia 808 PureView browser test

Here’s a comparison of the browser action between the iPhone 5 and the Nokia 808 PureView. One of the tips Symbian pro users suggest is to turn flash and java off. This turns your browser from something rather annoying to one that is much more usable.

Thanks Vlado for the tip!

Half of the pages I visit regularly do not work correctly with Java turned off.

:) Iphone clearly crushes the 808 in browsing , it doesn’t in scrolling, (although i’m aware that the camera might be the one to blame for that blurring. But if it’s less on the 808 (Amoled) I hope it’s close in the 920. Blurring while browsing the web is baaaad.

    another tip: turn off auto-reload

I wouldn’t turn off java though, auto reload and flash off should give a good boost.

Atfer watching full length video, I do not even think that iPhone won. They both are good. split second differences while loading a page. No difference moving around.

  4. solnyshok says:

    use Opera Mobile ftw

  5. X2 says:

    AMOLED is better than retina

  6. Jimi says:

all know that symbian contains a bad browser and 808 is only camera phone not a smart phone.

    • yourmama says:

Well then you need to get a clue :-)

    • dss says:

      If that makes you happy..

I am using the iPhone 5 and the 808 side by side, and I don’t see how the iPhone 5 can replace the 808 in terms of “smartphone” functions.. certain aspects, yes its better, but not overall. They are both better in certain things, then others.

  7. monkeyandweasel says:

I presume that this is fp1 for the 808. Would fp2 be even better?

    • dss says:

FP1, yes. I will make another video when FP2 comes out.. but it won’t be that much different… FP2 is not bringing much in terms of the browser, its more about the keyboard :)

      • Marc Aurel says:

I suppose fixing the Javascript engine would have been too much work at this point…

        • dss says:

I don’t think its “fixable” .. it seems to need more computing power. I guess making the browser use the GPU won’t hurt.. but I don’t know enough to really make a semi-knowledgeable comment on that :)

          • Marc Aurel says:

The Javascript engine of the Symbian Web is simply slow. The 808 has about the same amount computing power as a 1 GHz Snapdragon S1 generation processors, which perform better with Android browser. Even more importantly, Opera Mobile 12 renders Javascript heavy pages considerably faster than Symbian Browser 8.2, even though in my experience Opera Mobile is actually slower in scrolling.

Of course no amount of optimizing could make the 808 browsing experience as smooth as phones with a modern two or quad core processors, but it certainly could be better. That said, I find it perfectly usable even with Javascript on, although I tend to avoid Javascript heavy pages if I can.

            • dss says:

That makes sense.. I didn’t think the javascript engine on the symbian browser is great, and it could use some work, but back to your original statement.. is it really worth it at this point ? Probably not.

The browser, as far as i know, is a stand alone app, so it can be updated independently.. no need for a new firmware every time they update the browsers, which (if true) gives me some hope that we might see more updated to it..

  8. Puneet Singh Bajwa says:

Considering iphone5 is the one with best browser..808 looked quite good infact way way better than those negatives comments..it will only gonna improve with fp2 :)

  9. Banderpop says:

Pretty close really. Differences are almost negligible, which is a little surprising given that the iPhone 5′s A6 chip is supposed to be a beast.

Speed/smoothness aside, I’d give Symbian Web the edge on being able to download stuff like .sis, .zip, .torrent etc. files while iOS Safari will refuse these. But I think Safari is better at handling video, via HTML 5 and embedded media files, even though it lacks Flash.

    • dss says:

The difference is actually HUGE considering that the iPhone is doing all that with Java Script turned ON (there is no way to turn it off anyway).

If you turn it ON on the 808… its really bad :) I guess java script needs raw CPU/GPU processing power, and the 808 doesn’t have it, or the browser can’t take full advantage of it.. or combination of both.

      • Banderpop says:

When checking to see if I had Flash and reload turned off on my 808, I noticed for the first time that there was a word find option. So that’s another point to Web, because that’s a feature of desktop browsers I use a lot.

I probably missed that until now because I usually use Opera for any serious mobile browsing.

  10. Schneider says:

Haha, the 808 often finishes first and scrolling is faster. The iPhone looks sluggish in comparison. :P

    • Seurahepo says:

I admit I have not used 808. But I have tried Belle on some other devices.

Scrolling is fast, even too fast. The rubberbanding is feels bad and the scrolling seems to work only in 8 directions and not follow the finger, whereas iOS (on 3GS at least) follows the finger perfectly.

    • dss says:

The iphone uses a different speed when scrolling.. the Symbian one is very much like android, where depending on how fast you move your finger, the screen moves accordingly. The iPhone moves at the same speed no matter how fast you move your try to slide/swipe

  11. manchester man says:

To be honest with you the 808 browser is not to good even on the leaked fp2.
I actually think the one built into gravity is faster at loading web pages compare to the symbian one even when that has javascipt flash etc turned off.
The good thing about the stock one is you can download from it. when the flash player is outdated.
As for ios it might not be able to do direct download etc but theirs normally a dedicated app for well known websites which supplements the browser weakness.
sometimes with symbian their no way around the problems.

    • Marc Aurel says:

Sometimes yes, but in this case you could use Opera Mobile. Using a dedicated app for every download, on the other hand, is a pain in the neck and I can’t imagine how Apple fans could call it user friendliness. Although I am sure, they will find some way…

  12. stylinred says:

looks like he has some cfw running going

  13. André Zunido says:

Are we talking about a java plugin or the browser’s javascript engine itself? A browser without javascript will not work half-decently… IMO a good compromise for web browsing under symbian is the opera browser since its very light on the resource usage.
A browser without javascript can be as fast as lightning and it won’t matter since its just text and links (aka web 1.0).

    • dss says:

Opera Mobile is very heavy compared to the stock browser.. it eats way more RAM.

If you open 3 (the exact same) web pages on the stock and on the Opera Mobile, you will see a huge difference in RAM usage. Test it out..

The stock, with java script turned off, works for most pages.. all I do on my phone during browsing is read the news, look at pics, send/copy/paste web links, and watch tube (that needs the java ON) .. no problems at all.

      • Marc Aurel says:

Yes, Opera Mobile is more memory hungry, but the 808 (and others with 512 MB of RAM) has enough memory that it is not a real life problem. With Belle and its better memory management (compared to Anna or original S^3) it’s rarely a problem even with the older 256 MB phones.

        • dss says:

True. But it depends on how many apps you have open.. it might affect that, but.. I guess its not that big of a deal. I just like knowing that when I open 4-6 tabs, i still have RAM available to play with.

  14. jolla says:

is there a place to ask for an app for symbian to be made?

  15. Maybe says:

MNB takes the longest to load
    ^_^

  16. I was quite impressed by the 808 browser, iPhone was much better, but expected it to DESTROY the 808, it didn’t :)

    • dss says:

Well.. it does, we are cheating here with java script turned off. I should make another one with java ON, but it will be painful to watch..

  17. mrn0namePT says:

Why ur browser so fast and smooth? Not lag.Help me.My browser is slow and lag.

    • dss says:

Turn off: flash, javascript, and auto reload. Actually.. I don’t who shared that information on here first, but it wasn’t me. All credit goes to him/her, and thank you!

  18. Tak says:

I love my iPhone 4S, but 808 does its job in browsing too(not to mention other things, where it crushes its competitors), and I love my wifes 808.
