Weekend Watch: 13 minute hands on with the Nokia Lumia 920 (in French) #ElectricPikachuYellow
This is a hands on of the Nokia Lumia 920 (electric pikachu yellow!).
The sharp screen can be appreciated here by zooming into the small text and still seeing text that is readable. For those with poor vision, WVGA (and even nHD) is fine, but there will also be others who can appreciate high pixel densities, even beyond the magical ‘Retina’ level.

Well, didn’t he show a little too much? As I heard, people are not allowed over to applications screen…
I mentioned in other post that it could possibly be WP7.8.
I want to know where all these fancy consumer features are, you know, the one that makes it alright for MS to delay WP8 like so.
It’s unlikely that WP7.8 has any significant coding done yet.
thats the new os dont expect any amazing secret features
the only consumer features will be the integration with all the services that they will show on 29/10. xbox music video smartglass etc
the os may seem a lot like wp7 but its running on a new modern kernel and its still blazing fast. voip and location multitasking/integration, directx and native access is some of the many new features i am excited
think Ms is being a bit stupid on the directx thing and should allow openGl apps there as its the mobile industry standard, directx on the mobile represents a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of the consumers.
opengl used to be big on the desktop, now it’s pretty much just id using it. they managed to make directx win out over opengl and glide before, coming from behind, it makes sense for them to try again even if the environment isn’t quite the same
Exactly, we have seen most if not all new wp8 features already, I too am guessing. The announcement will , I think, like you say demo the three screen ecosystem integration.
It’s not 7.8. It has the new animations, the keyboard accent highlight colors, and so on. Also, it makes zero sense to write all the drivers etc for 7.8 for a device that’ll never run it.
I hope that’s not wp8. Not much difference to wp7.
Acutally, there is huge difference.. i know you can’t see it, but trust me, its there. A lot of people still confuse the OS with the UX..
I think Jay is right. Could not be WP8.
Yes, Jay is right ! Axel clearly says “On n’est pas sur du software définitif” which mean that is probably not wp8
No, it just means it’s not a final build.
I have a real hard time believing that is not WP8, how could it not be? Are the lumias hackable to allow to install other OS’s, does wp7 kernel support that screen def and cpu?…
Think he managed to get inside a nokia place (look at the big puf’s) and record that video.
Looks smooth and fast, (like most other OS’s) the screen does show its hidpi usefulness for text reading. Looks overall cool as WP usually do, (the app launcher is lame dough, the live tiles are much better now that they are centered) but will that be enough to win over new users?? doubt it the previous iteration did not.
ooo and multitasking screen still the same?? just use the same UI from the N9 dumb MS pay some royalties to Nokia and use the best UI for multitasking anywhere.
Fair comment.
Live tiles alone may not win over new customers. The combination of the hardware and software might. Which should go in favour of Nokia over other WPs, and hopefully iPhone/Android if they’re interested in smooth/fast/specs of modern smartphone and more.
Multitasking screen, seems no different to the one enjoyed on Belle FP1. The lack of X is because you don’t really need to manage the apps. It may be of use for some people in the future so as long as it’s not detrimental to the experience I don’t see why it shouldn’t be there.
as multitasking goes, the old belle/and others, UI is the only thing belle can do because of the small screen def, scaled down apps previews, would look very bad on a 4×4 app grid or worse 9×9, but for big phones like the L920 the N9 multitasking UI is unbeatable, Microsoft should just license that from Nokia, call it app task tiles or what ever..
or nokia coul just use the n9 multitasking view only on their phones, screw the other oems. they did say they could modify things.and they could even make the swipe to the right notifications list. it would defintely enhance the wp experience
+++1
They can’t use anything from the N9.. Nokia has nothing to do with the software any more, don’t expect anything special in that area.. its whatever Microsoft gives them, that is it.
I find the biggest annoyance with WP7.5 multitasking is that you sometimes end up having one app take up 3 of the 5 slots due to some weirdness of how it’s handled. It’d be useful if you could at least flick some of them away and have it re-populate. I understand why they don’t want to do the Android thing of having an endless list of recent/open apps, as it makes it pointless to use, but they could improve the management.
Just a couple of small things:
- Xbox logo rotates on the Music+Videos live tile – implying close integration between the phone and Xbox on those
- “Rooms” feature in the people hub
Nokia Belle FP2 seem better features that this WP8. As WP8 is using Metro Tiles, and Belle FP2 having multiple Home screen and also customizable, even better than WP8 ! FP2′s list view is comparable to WP8 list view too. The much complaint qwerty keyboard of Belle also been significantly improved in FP2 (the best improvement for me !).
If Belle/Donna able to double up the standard screen resolution from 640×320 to 1280×640, i think may be it will give another life to Symbian /Nokia as secondary Smart OS !
However, WP8 is much more fluid than Belle due to better CPU and clock speed. I not very sure whether Belle/Symbian is able to support dual-core or high core CPU.
WP8 is not much more fluid because of clock speed, but because it’s a modern design that takes full advantage of the GPU and never blocks the UI thread. WP7 was as smooth on 800MHz. Yes, it has a better CPU than any Symbian ever got, but that’s not the reason. Look at Android to see how much the OS has to do with it.
Symbian has been taking “Full advantage” of the GPU since Symbian^3 …
“and never blocks the UI thread”. Symbian can’t scroll the freakin application list without stuttering.
808 is actually slightly faster:)i think you is using a n8 and something.browser need some tweaking on symbian.symbian could even get faster will more qt inplant ui.symbian is more optimized.nokia belle fp2 is damn fast but some nokia apps are still not base on qt,base on avlone.belle fp2 is damn fast on arm11 processor.
Actually I’m using 808 as my secondary phone with primary N9. My N8 can’t be upgraded OTA to Belle due special product code 059B656 of main-board replaced by Nokia (I’m not happy with Nokia on this issue !).
I never play with WP8/920 before except WP7.5/800 on Nokia’s dealer shop. The WP is fluid and fast is purely based on Jay’s impression and opinion given from time to time in this blog, and i assume he is not biased.
However, I’m impressed with the fluid and speed of my 808 now with FP2. So far quite happy with it since July 2012.
i didnt understand a word ,but 13mins of lumia 920 is worth it.
that shiny beauty
Windows phone 7.5 AKA Mango had about 500 new features !! this does not look exiting at all considering the 7.5 update was such an huge upgrade from the previous version.
I really really hope Microsoft is distributing a version that has all the new features still not loaded so they can show off this new WP8 in all its glory later this month. If not.. well, many of us will be very disappointed and angry.
how many of those 500 features can you list off the top of your head?
I don´t like the call button to be only a small tile in the homescreen.
I think it should be always visible in the main screen, as the search button, or the windows button.
Damn, its a phone, not a computer.
All of these new OSs are scaled down Desktop OS, to be used on a phone. Symbian is the other way around, its a “phone OS” trying to be scaled “up” to be a computer… so that is why we still have hardware call buttons, and other cool sh*t like that .
If you want it to be bigger, you can make it bigger. A lot of people these days hardly do any calling and just use the phone for data apps and text messaging.
