Anssi Vanjoki possibly new CEO of Vertu which ditches Symbian for Android

| October 12, 2012 | 32 Replies

First and foremost, Anssi Vanjoki might be returning to a once Nokia related position, ex Nokia subsidiary, Vertu. Vertu is the luxury phone brand that defies all sense of logic because people that own it seem to have more money than sense. Well, they just have a lot of money full stop. Nokia decided that it would focus on core businesses and sold off Vertu. Now TechCrunch reckon, Vanjoki may take the position as CEO.

Furthermore, Symbian (only a recent addition to Vertu) will supposedly be ditched in favour of Android. Jordan Crook and Steve O’Hear of TechCrunch see WP8 as more fitting to their luxury OS thing but Android would be easier to sell.

In a small way, since Nokia still owns 10% of Vertu, it’s kinda nice to think Anssi is still somewhat connected again to Nokia (and oddly making Android).

Find replace-all “Nokia” with “Vertu” in this article. Replace both “Symbian” and “MeeGo” with “Android.” Insert the word “luxury” wherever necessary.

the E6 vertu doesnt seem too bad if it had come out back when the n8 was released i may have sprung for one

  3. Marc Aurel says:

Vertu is basically a pure exterior design company, because they don’t make or design their own hardware beyond the cases. I have hard time seeing Vanjoki leading such a company, but perhaps he just wants to have some kind of leadership position in the mobile industry. Who knows. There may not be anything to this rumor.

Symbian is obviously a dead end now, so Vertu needs to change the OS. WP has a limited number of manufacturers and while Nokia still owns 10% of the company, they may not be willing to give their WP phone designs. On the other hand there are plenty of Android makers to choose from and at least LG has already showed some interest in the high end design phones with the Prada model, although it is still a lot cheaper than the Vertu phones…

It was oh-so-recently when Vertu was telling customers that rich people don’t want touch screens.

    ha ha

  5. JGrove303 says:

Rixh people don’t need anything a smartphone delivers. They need a device that speed dials their CPA, Stock broker and the mistress. It has to look bitchen doing it, too.

Now, they could very well fork Android 4.1, use Nokia Maps and build their own app store for some medical level expensive titles

    • shallow ocean shoal says:

You realize that rich people have other little people like you to do those things for them.

They just want to play Angry Birds on their diamond studded iPhone.

    • ssdh says:

Android huh.. Although I’m more concerned with the security issues.. I have doubts about using that phone for any sensitive and personal info, especially business related stuff… Well, maybe rich people just use it to show off anyway, and to call their friends to their yacht or private island..
Hey look, kinetic scrolling on sapphire screen. Hey look, solid gold charging port. I just love this 100 karat diamond camera button.

  6. A-S-D says:

It makes sense. They have their own UI, their own services, etc. Android is perfect. WP8 would suck and they would have to somehow restrict the UI so it wasn’t so nice and colourful and more luxurious.

  7. migo says:

So I guess he’s peeing in his pants now?

  8. s3m44 says:

They just need a system with customizable UI and actively supported. Android is clearly the only choice.

Can you imagine a Vertu phone with tiles as homescreen? Simply not a match

    • Dave says:

Can you imagine Vertu running Android? Unless they do some serious window dressing, it’ll be useless.

    • viktor von d. says:

there was a leak in the summer with a vertu running wp8, so yeah i can imagine a vertu running wp8. and the phone may still be released

  9. EmmanuelM says:

it would be fun if they were going to Meego and change positionning to affordable high end (instead of “for super rich”).

I think things are now settling.. The old Nokia is gone but it looks like Finns are not giving up on doing nice looking, good radio performances and open OS phones…

  10. Bloob says:

I don’t think the OS matters all that much for these phones.

  11. Milos says:

Why android are they dumb they should go with MS, and they should offer Nokias exclusive services, WP8 is perfect because of its elegant design

  12. fi2 says:

They should go with MeeGo by the way of Jolla and use the same internals.

    • migo says:

I was thinking a year ago that MeeGo would have been perfect for Vertu. It has the simple elegance you want out of something that’s essentially jewelry, and all the drawbacks would have been irrelevant to a buyer, and might have even contributed to the air of exclusivity.

That would have been a way for Nokia to slowly incubate MeeGo until it had grown to be ready for mainstream use. Too bad.

      • Rocky says:

“I was thinking a year ago that MeeGo would have been perfect for Vertu.”

You weren’t, someone else 1st suggested it here approx. 9mths ago, you responded & more-or-less agreed.
You’ve never once suggested it here as an idea before anyone else…
People only 1st started thinking of it for Vertu, once all the changes really started to kick-in this yr.

  13. Janne says:

By the way, almost all Vertu devices are Series 40 (aka “Asha”), not Symbian. The only Symbian device from them is the Constellation Quest and its variants.

Just to correct a common misperception. They might now go Android for all I know.

    • Dave says:

The potential for a move to another platform isn’t going to be taken lightly.

They’ll basically be starting from scratch – their current range is a bunch of slightly reworked Nokia devices, all the “hard” work has already been done. Vertu just slap some lipstick on and ups the price.

Going android would likely mean designing complete hardware from the ground up. Not necessarily that quick.

  14. Antti says:

Some Swedish papers are reporting rumours of Vanjoki becoming CEO of Swedish-Finnish operator TeliaSonera…

  15. Deep Space Bar says:

ANDROID LOOKS LIKE SYMBIAN…….OBVIOUSLY THEY WILL USE IT FOR THAT REASON PLUS IS SELLS WELL JUST LIKE HOW SYMBIAN USE TOO >.> jeeze people you don’t think

    • Dave says:

They’ll continue using S40 for a while yet; if they are going the Android route, they’ll be having to design and build the complete hardware themselves – which they don’t do at the moment.
