BetaLabs Publishes WiFI Update for Belle FP1 Devices

| December 21, 2012 | 15 Replies

Previously I noted that my 808 had some issues connecting/maintaining a connection to my home WiFi connection, which some of you pointed out has been a constant bug in Symbian since the start. Beta Labs have published a WiFi update for all FP1 device that fixes some “WiFI interoperability issues” which should hopefully settle the matter:

It has been reported that following Symbian devices: Nokia 603, Nokia 700, Nokia 701 and Nokia 808 PureView having Belle Feature Pack 1 (FP1) or Belle Feature Pack (FP2) release are facing Wi-Fi interoperability (IOP) issues with some old WLAN Access Points (AP). An issue with the WLAN software has been identified and a fix has been made.

This trial updates the WLAN software on the phone. The trial is not available for other products or Nokia 700 Belle release or Nokia 701 Belle release.
The product team would appreciate any feedback, negative or positive, regarding this trial.

You can download the update (as a .sis file) onto your compatible device from HERE and install it directly (NOTE: You need to disconnect your Device’s WiFi before installing the update).

Too bad that the First Gen S^3 devices are no longer supported.
Would have been great to get a wifi fix for my N8 too…

They supported N8 for a long time. Maybe not as long as someone else has but quite long considering it’s a Nokia.

Nokia has (almost) never supported phones as long as Apple has. I think iPhone 3GS is still supported by iOS 6.x. Some features may be missing but it’s supported. Nokia should learn from them.

Elop changed a lot and better support for the old phones is something he can take credit for. Let’s hope they will continue and improve this tradition with WP8 phones.

It’s just that this wifi bug was there from day one, and never got a fix 😉

That’s not so strange. Even iPhone has few bugs Apple never fixed.

Good to know that they still care for Symbian users. This kind of bug fixes and support will definitely help in retaining few customers.

Hope they will fix the focus issue of 808. Specifically in close-up mode.

Waiting for Swype update!!! Swype is currently completely broken in FP2

    • Dave

It will never be fixed; remember that the decent version of swype never made it into a fully public release (v2, stayed in beta). There is no more development being done on Swype 🙁

Swype Inc. have said that they are trying to get a solution out, and are aware of how users have been able to find their own solution if they are prepared to hack their phones, but they can’t yet say when a legitimate fix/update will happen.

Looks like there’s an obstacle that neither Nokia or Swype will talk about. My guess is that Elop told them to get lost because Windows Phone can’t use third-party input solutions, and Symbian needs to stop continuing to be so much more flexible.

As recently as November 27th, merely a few weeks ago, Swype themselves have stated that they are working on fixing Symbian Swype:
