Jolla shakes hands with Sony for Xperia with Sailfish – maybe an inspiration for Nokia with Sailfish?

| February 28, 2017 | 23 Replies

There’s no denying that there are quite a few Nokia fans that are also Maemo/MeeGo/Sailfish (alternate Nokia connected of sorts OS).

There’s some nice news about that shows some hope for Jolla as Sony are gonna be making a Sailfish powered Xperia phone.

Yesterday we learnt that Nokia is going by market demand (imagine they did that back in WP days :p joke joke). So maybe Sony can inspire Nokia and HMD to go along this route for those who want a different non-Android OS that has apps.

If you still wanted a Nokia with Sailfish, you could just install Sailfish on either Nokia 3, 5 or 6.

  • Oh yes!!! Y not ask jolla about making Sailfish OS available for new Nokia 3,5&6 same as they made it available for xperia?

    • Muerte

Why wouldn’t you just install Salefish OS yourself?

      • Dileesh Jostin

        Hi Muerte,

Would you happen to have any handy link on how to do this ? ( I own a Intex Sailfish device)

        Thanks
        dj

        • then y do you need a link you already have sailfish OS on board πŸ˜›

          • Dileesh Jostin

            Thanks Muerte πŸ™‚

            Hi Lovenokia,

I wanted to know how to install on the new nokia devices or any other android phone

            Thanks
            dj

            • πŸ™‚ I understood that man… i was just joking πŸ™‚ πŸ˜›

There is detailed guid how to do it with Android phone, and some models have already ported Sailfish, and sometimes authors shares with images of needed fikes and instructions how-to step-by-step also. Use Google.

not to mention there is neither Exchange support, nor Alien Dalvik then…

  • Nokia could do this on a on-demand basis.

    • Jukka-Pekka Sokero

Has there been any info, whether the bootloader is open or not in the new devices?

      • Systematic Systematic

Haven’t looked for precise answer, no reliable source. But anyway if ever would appear it would be open then I would take one or two and flash it with Sailfish, as that would be quite simple.

Knowing history I bet the booloader will be closed however. πŸ™

        • Jukka-Pekka Sokero

Agree, especially since HMD said that they are working closely with Google

    • zlutor

      I wish it was true…

    • Systematic Systematic

There was such a demand from the beginning, but Nokia don’t care so far.

  • zlutor

Jay: you say “you can… install on N3,5,6”

where is this info from? HMD/Nokia/Jolla people said it so?

It is not that obvious you can make it happen for any random Android phone…

    • Systematic Systematic

I confirm that. Linux MeeGo Sailfish OS thanks to internal design with middleware of MER core, Wayland and especially thanks to Libhybrids can be launched on exactly every Android hardware. Just Libhybrids utilise existing drivers for hardware, so there is no need to write them from scratch, but use those provided by HW manufacturer for Android purposes, and what is important this is legitimate use. So: YES every Android mobile can have Sailfish launched on it. In consequence: yes, EVERY Nokia from MWC is the Sailfish OS ready device, precisely and exactly. In my estimation: making each one of them a Sailfish OS native device would require about up to 4 weeks of development. To make Nokia HQ to be willing to do that: from practise of my efforts: unpredictable, you can see my begging here from years and still nothing.

It’s a pity, but seems I will move to Sony Sailfish device when it will be available and will stick to them, as seems to me Nokia don’t care.

BTW.: The full Sailfih OS can also be in shown new 3310.

      • Systematic Systematic

By development work I mean to port complete Sailfish OS to those particular devices, to the phase of market ready device including specific for Nokia UI modifications and / or adding Nokia services or software like image processing from PV808 etc.etc..

      • zlutor

it would be more than beneficial if Jolla would do the port _officially_ – meaning Alien Dalvik and Exchange integration included into the pack as well.

without that any Sailfish device can hardly be daily driver – at least, for me…

        • Systematic Systematic

You are absolutely right. Exactly this is what differs “community ports of Sailfish OS” to anything form “official support of Sailfish at X in frame of {licensing, agreement, contract, alliance, cooperation, etc.} with Jolla” because that allows licences for Alien Dalvik etc. are included, besides of course of Jolla software like UI and etc..

  • rustyknight17

Hmm looks like I.’ll e keeping an eye on Sony .

Instead of all comments, just a tweet:
    ” Christopher Adol‏
    @chrisadol

Someone please lock @nokia & @JollaHQ in a room at #MWC17 until they agree to make a new Nokia N955 with horizontal keyboard & #SailfishOS ”

    Who agrees?

  • Systematic Systematic

I really hoped for a surprise that Nokia would make even and pre-agreement with Jolla during MWC2017, or anything like handshaking. Well, hoped. Not only me, but people from everywhere keep asking “Where is Nokia with Sailfish OS”? Those are market calls, which Nokia is listening to. And still I hope it will happen, a dream device, Nokia Sailfish device. Once, we used to dream, and sometimes Nokie were making dreams come true. Can we dream? Can we await for Nokia Sailfish device? Why that would not to work for Nokia, while it works for so many?
