But who will view this? Well, we’ll try and get this towards the right Nokia folk. Currently right now Alex68 has asked for easily fixed bugs In this post we’ll try to organize these comments (and our own suggestions) to make them easier to navigate and for you guys to share your opinions whether you think they’re good ideas or whether you feel you can improve on them.

Really good idea Jay, hopefully Nokia notices this.

    Here’s my list of suggestios/complaints/bugs/etc..

    -Keyboard is not multitouch

-Keyboard is not well layed out/designed, it’s not pretty and the layout is not good.

    -No portrait keyboard

-Swype should be integrated with a firmware/update with BOTH landscape and portrait QWERTY.

-Keyboard does not overlay/”hover” over an app, opens in it’s own new window instead

-Built in Browser is not good

-Ovi maps does not support pinch zooming, Ovi maps UI is TERRIBLE!
Read my suggestions here please: http://tinyurl.com/36dbbgy

-Homescreen does not follow the finger, it should and so should the wallpaper ala N900

-Photo viewer lags on the first pinch-zoom gesture, no kinetic panning when zoomed it the picture, no bounce effect(on both max zoom in and out) to let you know that you’re at the max zoom.

-Does not rotate to landscape to both sides, if you tilt the phone left, it does not go into landscape mode… only to the right.

-Animations and transitions effects aren’t good/consistent, it needs simple but effective and pleasant transitions, I like zoom in-zoom out for application opening/closing and menus moving from right to left for in-application navigation, like the iPhone basically.

-Needs 30FPS video recording, continuous auto-focus option, there should be an on/off option for continuous auto focus and 25 or 30FPS switch option too.

-Default theme is bad, the black background in Menus is ugly, I know it probably saves battery, but the first impression is everything.

-Menu positions gets reset when you open/close menu, you always open the menu from “scratch” – This was not a problem in previous Symbians, if you entered the “Applications” folder in the menu and then started an application, the next time you pressed the “Menu” button, it’d open up where you were last i.e. “Applications” folder, not at the root of the Menu. If you used “Exit” then sure it’d start from the root next time.

-Player does not remember the video position when you exit, always starts from the beginning, again should be an option, different users prefer different ways.

-Music player lacks lots of options previous Symbian phones had, managing tags, etc…

-No birthday imports from contacts into the calendar, what’s the point in entering a birthday in a contact details when it does not show up in the Calendar?

-”Search” is terrible, slow and useless, not to mention badly designed, The Search widget should display results as you type you shouldn’t have to first type something… then tap “Search”, then window opens up and it begins a slow search, it should search as you type and it should be the same system as the Dial pad search in S^3, it should make phone numbers, bookmarks, filenames, contact names, map favorites, everything in the phone, and it should be all displayed right there in front of you so you can tap on it quickly, not in some other window that opens after you enter what you’re searching for.

    OVI MAPS:

    1. The main menu screen, there is lots of garbage there, most of the stuff needs to be removed…

    http://i.imgur.com/mmeKQ.png

Make it modular, like add-ons for Firefox so a user can download or delete whatever he/she does not need.

Where did the good old Dashboard go? Remember this?…

    http://i.imgur.com/LkWJG.png

It should be offered as an add-on for main menu, History shortcut should be there too and “Navigate Home” shortcut.

    2. Search is AWFUL, just horrible!!!

Where is search by Coordinates? where is search by Contacts? History, Detailed address? There is Coordinate and Contacts search in Ovi maps now but IT, IS, HORRIBLE! you’ll have to dig into multiple menus, do multiple things… very messy.

This is what this sorry “search” looks like now…

    http://i.imgur.com/swXwL.png

THIS, is what it should be like…

    http://i.imgur.com/2NZoL.png

The Cyan text field should be a quick search that searches in all the categories below it… Address, Contacts, Coordinates, Categories, History. If you enter “James” it should bring up results with streets named James… something, History with “James” streets as destinations, Contacts called James, everything.

Or you can search more specifically, go into “Address” and enter country, city, street, house number in their own fields.

“Contacts” opens up a window with your contacts that have address assigned to them.

“History” opens up a window with all your previous navigations.

“Coordinates” opens up a menu where you can enter coordinates, longitude, latitude.

“Categories” opens up your usual categories… shops, hotels, etc…

Ovi maps has a very badly designed UI, so unintuitive so scattered around, no organization at all.

Search is so so important, yet Ovi Maps offers only the most basic search option, all the options should be in one place as shown above.

There is no need for “Walk” and “Drive” menu buttons, let person search and let them choose in the end do they want to walk or drive to that point.

Besides that, Ovi maps is also missing so many little functions…

    Map screenshots
    Align map to route/north
    Turn positioning off
    Go online On/off
    Dashboard(mentioned above)

    And many more…

    I suggest you to: http://ideas.symbian.org/homepagelight
come here and create and vote for ideas, that will be better, because nokia uses it for sure and there are needed 30 votes for project so community of this blog should participate

BUG: Key tones in general profile is on > Then activate power saving > Deactivate power saving > Now key tones is off.

That’s really annoying thing. I use power saving every time when battery is low and when I’m charging my phone I’m turning it off, and then I should do 1 billion clicks to turn on key tones.
    Please fix it.

    • alex68

This is very annoying. I can understand. But why do you turn your phone off when charging it. Nokia N8 doesn’t need to do it. Or can this be a workaround.

      • Satanlovesyou

No :) I’m sorry, I mean I’m turning off saving energy mode.

  • Cod3rror

-Profiles switching – When you go into Menu -> Tools -> Profiles, and select a profile a menu pops up asking if you want to “Activate” and also “Timed” activation.

When you switch profiles by pushing the power button on your phone, there is no “Timed” activation option anywhere, there should be one.

Ovi Maps – Make it possible to review the route/zoom in and out easily/do whatever the hell I want whilst navigating! The lack of this feature is infuriating!

    • Andre

Inability to pan while navigating is a serious issue

      • webby

Yep, it’s easily my biggest gripe with Ovi Maps. Pinch zooming and all that would just be a nice added extra whereas this has the ability to drive me insane.

Another nice extra would be to be being able to review the different routes to a destination before and during navigating. This is quite a handy feature in Google Maps.

    • Cocco Bill

You can review the route by swiping down (and up to reverse) while navigating. It shows the route turn by turn. Swiping left/right changes the navigation view (2D, 3D, arrow, route). And you can zoom in/out with + and – buttons. I was at home and just chose a navigation from here to some place and didn’t actually drive it, so I’m not sure if/how movement affects the use.

Because they have made the screen swiping function like that, moving the map around freely during navigation is not possible.

This applies to Ovi Maps v3.04. I don’t know if v3.06 beta works the same way. I haven’t installed it.

      • webby

Yes I know that, but it’s a convoluted way of doing things.I can either have a big zoomed out view with no details, or I can see the different parts of the route, but one fraction out with a swipe (or most of the times, just on it’s own) it’ll just go back to where I am at the moment.

It’s quite frankly an utterly ridiculous way of doing things. I want to be able to do whatever I want when navigating. Whether it’s zooming, panning, or anything. ATM it’s impossible, and it ruins an otherwise ace application.

    • Don

Perhaps I am using it wrong (maps 3.06), but, let’s say I search for something, and find it on the map.

Then if I go back to the maps menu, i’ve lost my position on the map. I can not go back to where I was looking at, only “my position” or a new search. AAARGH.

The side scrolling during navigation is not obvious, and could be animated with perhaps a zoom out view where it shows you the different screens available.

Better yet, add vector and an offline map source to Qt Mobility (in addition to the currently “online” nokia ovi map tile source) with the hard stuff taken care of (map position to the actual nearest road based on previous positions and some heuristics) and let the community go wild and create their own mapping applications!

  • http://www.symbian.org Rahul

    1. Messaging app should be able to copy from/to SIM card to/from phone memory
    2. Personalized equalizer for music player. Also the Album view and Artists view for Music player.
    3. Motion sensor integration with Photos. Should go to nxt pic when sliding movement is done.

  • http://www.symbian.org Rahul

    4. Caldav integration in S^3, should come as an upgrade in N8
    5. Customized aspect ratio selection in any megapixel mode in Camera

  • nocare

1.press menu + power to take screensnap

2.widgets for email, calender, etc shoud be resizable, to be made double the size of one widgets, 7 widgets on homescreen when the bottom option-back menu bar is gone,

  • http://heliosoutsourcing.wordpress.com heliosoutsourcing

More home screens , Widgets should be placed any where on the screen(similar to android), Pinch and zoom in home screen

  • gordonH

    Bugs:
1)MMS gets stuck in the outbox, cannot delete or move it.
    2) Changed my password on gmail, then I changed it on the N8… email did not sync, worse was not being notified of the failed sync. I solved the problem by deleting and re-installing my gmail.
3)After taking a picture the back onscreen button is too slow to respond.
4)When screen is in album art(cover flow)on portrait mode it doesn’t have “playist” in the option menu.
    Wishlist:
1)Faster/simplier way to make phone calls from the contact screen. The N8 makes me miss the green and red buttons on the C7.
2)A separated and new default folder for keeping downloaded email attachment.

  • Mazze

Apart from the above mentioned: While you’re on one of the homescreens, vertical swiping should bring up all installed applications (like Android). This would save a lot of time!

  • Don

After having the N8 turned on for about 2 weeks straight, I noticed it started to slow down a lot. Had no applications running, no things like swype installed. Pressing the camera shutter button can easily take 20 seconds to bring up the viewfinder, with another 10-20 seconds before the controls appear and you can actually start to take a picture.

Turn phone off-on, and it’s zippy again. From zero to taking a picture in seconds.

Hard to point to a specific reason without any debug information, but you can compare it to a desktop machine under memory pressure, so perhaps its a memory or resource leak.

This has been a complaint about Symbian in the past, so I’d really like to see some effort in eliminating leaks. If only valgrind could debug Symbian…

  • Mark Anderson

Generally happy but here’s my bug list:

    Email

    1) Mail application can slow down. This is particularly true on Gmail when there is an extended chain of e-mails and with reply to multiple recipients. If it’s a single e-mail it seems to be OK.
    2) If I set e-mail to retrieve the whole message it should do so. I do not expect to be looking at a ‘retrieving’ screen for up to twenty seconds. The e-mail should not register on the display until it has been completely received.

    Camera UI

Is still a bit scruffy and has shades of S60 about it. Needs a tidy up.

    Soft Keys

Where the option is Delete, Save to draft or Cancel (for example, draft e-mails) put Delete on one button, Save to Draft on the other and a tap outside the selection box for the cancel option. A list is unnecessary.

    Browser

Speed it up and add a back button. There’s one on web enabled stuff like Here and Now so no excuses please.

    FM Transmitter

When I’ve already set it and switched it on there’s no need to give me a pop up telling me that I have. It’s redundant. Please lose this along with the ‘unplug your charger message’ and anything else like it.

    Uploading

Allow Titles on Facebook uploads using Social.

    Social

Let me see who liked a post.

    Keyboard

    1) Should be an overlay, not full screen.
    2) A portrait QWERTY would be a nice option to have.
    3) Make auto correct the default.
    4) If you can make the keyboards user definable that would be awesome.
    5) Do NOT integrate Swype with the landscape keyboard as it’s functionally useless on this.

    Search

Is slow, tedious and cumbersome. Use something like Offscreen’s Grid which is a million times better.

And that’s about it really. Like I say, I’m happy enough with it but fixing these bits would make it even better.

  • Rock

For camera, i wish there will be options for metering mode and longer exposure time, say at least 2 seconds. I dont care about the noise.

  • urchick

Bluetooth devices search should start immediately after selecting “Via Bluetooth”. No “More devices” should appear, no menu for device types.

Keyboard should be able to switch input language with one click, not 3.

  • benzas

middle button needs to be changed (the one with 3 dots) on home screen to MENU

c: disk size is small , also can not be increased

Text ”menu and clock” in menu are useless, they are taking 1/5 of the menu screen, they need to be edited to make full screen menu) ?

possibility to change home screen to CALL screen ? (also change right selection key ”call” to ”menu” or something?

themes are useless 1 original theme is enough , if you want more – download it

also we do need a possibility to remove apps like “user guide, top apps, search, phone setup, my nokia… etc”

  • Satanlovesyou

BUG: add new phone number to contact that already exists > find contact in phone book > tap on a second tab (it’s on top) > here is two numbers, oldest marked as default – it’s impossible to mark new number as default.
