Huawei and Panasonic to join MeeGo

| April 22, 2011 | 33 Replies

MeeGoExperts is reporting that handset makers Huawei and Panasonic are also going to join LG on the MeeGo project.

This will be official if nominations to MeeGo Handset Group are approved.

I think I’d be giving Nokia too much credit that they’d tactically move away from MeeGo to give space for new manufacturers to have a go.

nokia wasnt brave enough to do it

but they never completely came out of it(they can still go back to meego for some handsets)

i really want meego to be success

and kill all those analysts who said meego is shit and wont even be good enough to compete in the market

  2. Johnny Tremaine says:

Well, this lineup doesn’t inspire confidence. LG in particular has said that they only want to use Meego, maybe, in car info-tainment systems.

Honestly, as of now, Meego is the Duke Nukem Forever of mobile software.

  3. stylinred says:

Im glad to hear about this

I’ve always been a fan of panasonic

and Huawei seems to be growing rapidly

Maybe we’ll see Nokia using Meego again

    • napier says:

Me too. Along with Nokia, Panasonic has been my favourite brand. Hopefully something good comes out of this.
As for Nokia, well, they pretty much dead for me now unfortunately. Just another OEM like HTC. A company with no individual character or soul. Sad…

  4. nocare says:

only wp7 fails then meego has the chance

    • h3csc says:

if WP7 failed, Nokia is no more.

      • deep space bar says:

        wp7 failed already

        • Someone says:

yeah… just like maemo and meego failed. Right? And maybe like Symbian has been gradually failing. You guys really make me laugh. :D

          • Rant says:

Finally someone else here says it.

All the praise that MeeGo is getting is irrelevant since it is non-existent. That Maemo got it, I understand. It’s good, but unfortunatly also killed.

            • deep space bar says:

elop killed maemo5 and meego for WP7 which is going no where at all

              • Rant says:

Elop killed MeeGo, Maemo was already killed under OPK to be joined into that deathpool called MeeGo.

Nokia should have just developed Maemo as the next Symbian.
Ah well, what if… what if…

                • Shmerl says:

Nokia doesn’t own Meego and can’t kill it as well.

                • Eddy says:

                  AMEN RANT!

omg i totally agree with you there. The management before Elop killed Maemo. When the n900 came out, everyone thought Maemo would be the “next-gen” OS after Symbian. Turns out it was a stepping stone before Meego. Fast forward to today, what’s MeeGo? how could people have faith on MeeGo when no one know what the final product is going to be like?

Nokia dropped the ball with Maemo, they sat on their asses and relied on ordinary users to keep coming back. Their marketshare was slipping before Elop came onboard and some flks here just still don’t get it.

              • Someone says:

what? elop killed maemo5? It is obvious you have no clue about what you are saying. You just want to follow the crowd. Maemo was killed with the intention to join with Intel’s Moblin to form Meego long before Elop even came to office. Dude, if you want to trash talk do some research first. Damn, the level to which some of you are really ignorant is breath-taking.

  5. shontom says:

Nokia’s recent approach is a part of its strategy. Nokia thought that a bigger push is needed to make MeeGo a hit. I never believed that nokia would throw away its pet project so easily, atleast not after investing millions. Nokia alone could not penetrate the markets properly. But now with big players like Panasonic, Lg, Huawei, MeeGo can target different markets other than US ( japan, China, Korea, India and other Asian countries, stronghold of Panasonic, Lg, Huawei etc). Hope MeeGo do well.

    • Mendax says:

If they make a decently-spec’d MeeGo-friendly device (N950?), doesn’t matter who develops the OS. Well, almost.

It’s a little disheartening, though, that Intel is jumping on the Android bandwagon:

      • blert13 says:

Intel have always been on the Android bandwagon, its not news, they have been saying they will support Android for years now. This isnt news, the only news here is they have Android 3.0 code, up until now they only support pre 3.0.

Its not suprising intel support Android, they clearly dont want to put all their bags in one basket, while Meego is what I imagine they would favour to succeed, having a back up plan, or an alternative for manufacturers who just want Android makes sense.

  6. Stuart says:

I love panasonic laptops and I’d love if they made cellphones for markets outside of Japan.

    • outdated os says:

back then, japanese phones were way more advanced than the phones Nokia keep touting about. Too bad they didn’t have global phone.

  7. chfyfx says:

I bet we would see Meego with Windows OS and iOS in the future.

  8. Razor says:

Lg is not going to make any meego phone lately. They only gonna make an os for car infotainment system. Have you checked the updated engadget post?

  9. Mac says:

Jay, I’d like to believe your sentiments are true but knowing Nokia, I like you have my doubts in that being their true intention in ditching meego….to help it grow and reach its true potential and to gather the support that it deserves?! I wish its true and Nokia go back to it….or else they will be left behind….again!!!

    • dsmobile says:

Actually it’s good news for MeeGo that Nokia drop it out. Because it’s very well known that currently people in lead never make right decisions. =)

    • dsmobile says:

Elop has also say that WP is also just transition phase OS and that Nokia still is looking for new OS that is not MS ecosystem based. Anyway that was quote from some news I read.

Well Anything can happen. Anyway best way to support Nokia and new OS. Is to get N950 or what ever the name will be for that phone. :)

  10. Zaxxx says:

I’m so excited about this damn can’t wait.

  11. Subashish says:

Its evident that MeeGo is promising indeed. And the fact that vendors like LG and Panasonic have decided to tap into it makes it all the more worthwhile to consider it as a very viable (and available) Android alternative. Nokia’s Maemo strategy was somewhat unclear, and so is their future MeeGo strategy. However, the other manufacturers implementing MeeGo would ensure more market penetration. Certainly something worth looking out for.

  12. Abc says:

    Cool!!!!!!
Big slash to Nokia and its CEO and Nokia’s so called partner(master indeed)

    But Nokia is grasping QML.
