Joe Belfiore and Microsoft co speaking at Nokia World 2011 #NokiaWorld
If you were every in any doubt as to whether Nokia would launch their first Windows Phone in 2011, well let Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore rest your concerns.
Joe Belfiore is pretty much the face of Windows Phone for Microsoft.
Corporate Vice President
Windows Phone Program
Microsoft
Joe Belfiore co-manages the Windows Phone team, heading up product definition and design.
Joe will be speaking on Day 1, October 26 at 13:35.
Guest Speaker
Building a different kind of UI
Joe Belfiore, Corporate Vice President, Windows Phone Program, Microsoft
He’s the only one at the moment from Microsoft on the main speakers list but you’ll also note Albert Shum, Director of Mobile Experience Design, Microsoft speaking on a panel. WMPower user says Brandon Watson will also be attending.
Yusuf Mehdi, Senior Vice President, Online Microsoft will participate in panel discussion on Business mobility as a consumer value proposition.
Brandon Watson, Senior Director of Windows Phone 7 development and Matt(hew) Bencke, General Manager of Developer and Marketplace will give developers a Windows Phone Spotlight
Also in the picture is Marko Ahtisaari. He wasn’t there the last time we took a look at the speakers list. We’re a big fan of this guy. He was the one who introduced the N9 to us. He will be on a panel called, “Designing Smarter Phones” and I think he’ll be doing his own talk though I can’t locate what.

Thanks Viipottaja and Just Visiting for the tip!

I am intrigued to see whether the general public likes WinPho’s tiles or not. It’s one of those real love it or hate it features. What a risk!
I have mixed feelings toward Windows Phone from its first proper display. I like part of it’s UI, it is near to my taste but than I don’t like many things in it either. I have been a regular reader of your comments as well, specially the long ones.
I still think same for Windows Phone as I did at day one that it needs a long way till world will accept it completly and for that to happen, Microsoft need to take away some of the limits they put on, and give it the true power of a proper OS, such as real multitasking for the starter.
I am N8 user, I like Symbian and been in love with UIQ running on P1i, and I say if anyone want to see Symbian to its most perfection, try P1i. Its the most comfortable and quick in all Symbians in term of users interaction to carry out options. Symbian and Symbian 3 easily gives me High BP and headache using simple task such as finding an image and moving it to another folder, or viewing a number of images using file manager in a folder. Note that I am without Anna yet.
I write a long list of things that could improve user’s experience without too much changing into codes and by only replacing the menu items. Sadly the site I have it is down.
Now I do like Symbian 3, I think it has future, and I want it to bring a powerful experience for everyone.
I’d be interested to see what you think of Belle then given your experiences with UIQ etc.
Well they just won a bunch of Design awards for it, including user’s choice!
It is definitely very different and people hate change but it is so much better than static icons! People will see that once they use it. I know as a developer I love the fact I can change and update them to fit the experience of my app!
In the description for IDEA 2011, it says “The Windows Phone 7 was built around the idea that the end user is king”. Really??? I didn’t know that you can put limits on a king. WP is so limited, it feels like the end user is more of a prisoner than king just like iOS.
“The design team began by defining and understanding the people who would use this phone. It was convinced that there could be a better user experience for a phone, one that revolves more around who the users are rather than what they do.” I wonder how many different view did they have before finalizing the UX.
Also, MS was a sponsor to the event..

+1
Although i have an iphone, this is the reason i dont use it. I want full control
It should be WP7 is built that “Content is King”. They really nailed the content centric approach to an OS. Everything feels so connected and alive.
I almost forgot that Facebook, Messenger and Twitter existed even though I use them now more than ever before haha.
> ” I know as a developer I love the fact I can change and update them to fit the experience of my app!”
So what about the widgets Symbian has had for ages then? You can update those too with all sorts of info, and now in Belle they can be different shapes and sizes. This seems to me significantly more advanced than the rectangular blocks of Windows Phone.
Widgets are nice as well! Not saying they are not! But they are not the same thing.
Live Tiles replace static icons with dynamic icons. Widgets are more extensions of applications. I usually find that I choose Widgets not because they are useful but more because just maybe I found some that don’t look terrible next to each other
If you ask me, Live Tiles are Widgets… just widgets (and fixed ones like the ones on Symbian 3 and the N97/C6 HS)
What do you mean “I am intrigued to see whether the general public likes WinPho’s tiles or not” Windows Phone 7 has been out for a year now. People don’t seem to love it, myself included.
Marko should show the N9 and blow them all away!
No, really, he’ll probably redo his “design patterns” pitch but without mentioning the N9, he’s been saying the same thing ever since he arrived at Nokia (at least since mid-2010).
Marko will hate being there if he needs to mention Windows Phone.
Considering how much work went into the N9, can you really blame him ?
I hope the N9 sells well, they will all look silly if that happens..
all these agressive americans who destroy Nokia
Nokia insiders, like OPK, destroyed Nokia.
Get these MS people out of there! Besides, unlike (and opposite to) Symbian, WinPho7 may have a slick UI but a real crufty core (WinCE kernel). Now which would you prefer, fancy paint job over the core engine?
What is wrong with the WinCE core ? It seems to performing very well in wp7. I hear the OS is rock solid, no restarts, no crashes..
Now… yes, a lot of functionality is missing, and that might be helping the stability (less room for error), but still..
What is really missing in Win7.5 is battery life. No wonder -> the core is crap and the tiles suck juice like vampire
You’re kidding right? Have you tried an Android with comparable specs?
My Omnia 7 has an excellent battery life. Perhaps there’s something wrong with your battery
“WinCE is another Windows with all its problems, just in slightly different places. After a decade of work, it’s just now approaching the point of being usably complete, and at the same time, entirely obsolete.”
Read this (very old article) about the Win CE development history – it says Win CE is a patch work:
Don’t imagine things are different now.
http://www.pencomputing.com/WinCE/columns_29.html
As opposed to that Symbian Kernel EKA2 is a true crown jewel:
http://www.informit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=1578523
The Win CE kernel (as all OS kernel’s) evolve over time.
Even more importantly noone outside Microsoft knows what kernel Windows Phone is based on (It appears to be a hybrid)
And even even more importantly Windows Phone 8 aka Apollo will probably adopt the Windows 8 kernel
Very good to hear, Joe Belfiore is a great speaker! I hope they release a phone in the States
I atleast hope Nokia do announce a WP device during the Nokia world..
This will be the first unveiling to the world of Nokias first Windows Phone.
Just wonder if only ONE device will be released (e.g. ‘mid’ level Nokia Sea Ray) or multiple devices also shown (e.g. high end)???
I’m a bit disappointed that we won’t see Steve Ballmer. Hopefully he’ll make a surprise appearance
To do what? Scream “developers, developers, developers”?
Yeah, to do his ‘monkey dance’

Maybe that will convince Nokia to wake up, and fight for a MeeGo future!
*wishful thinking*
Nokia is big enough to support both Windows Phone and MeeGo. Your comment is stupid
Hopefully they’ll fit in some new Symbian Belle phones too.
Would love to see more Belle Devices
Joe Belfiore is cool, but Marko Ahtisaari is the man!!! I’m not a Nokia fan, but after listening his lecture about the N9, got me thinking about it in new ways.
I’m an Ahtisaari fan.
