Nokia bringing Lumia to Japan?

Not quite sure what this is indicating. It appears to list devices coming soon to Japan on NTT DoCoMo.

Windows Phone is already geared up for the Japanese language, with Fujitsu’s almost Lumia like colourfulness heading Windows Phone for Japan.

Here’s an advert from Japanese carrier KDDI for the Fujitsu phone.

Cheers  Dave² for the tip!

Fujitsu wp7 phone has very good specs for being a wp7 phone …. Why didn’t they do a global release…

    • DesR85 says:

I have no idea either. They’re not the only Japanese manufacturer who do not release their phones globally. Panasonic and Sharp also manufacture phones but restrict them to the Japanese market. Sony is one exception, but even so, not all their phones are released globally aside from their Xperia line.

    • senshi says:

Nearly all the Japanese phone makers were burnt during the GSM/initial 3G era with their over-priced and over-speced and incompatible with international standards phones so they all closed their overseas shops and judge that the overseas market isn’t worth their time and money. Currently none of the OEM except Sony has any channel setup to release their phones, and I don’t expect to see that change any time soon, if ever.

I like to keep optimistic… but I don’t think Japan will be a territory where Windows Phone, let alone Lumia, will ever succeed.

Nokia has never been a market leader there – yet Symbian was Japan’s most popular smartphone OS up until 2011. Microsoft too, has a weird track record there – Windows is of course popular, but Xbox has never gained traction and Office used to struggle badly against Japanese office productivity suites.

Best of luck to them regardless!

Its odd really, the Japanese market for cellphones operate quite differently.

Symbian over there is different from Nokia Symbian. They have the Symbian ^2 line, not the ^3 line. Last year, they came up with a Symbian/Windows 7 (the desktop OS) duel boot phone.

As for the Fujitsu Windows Phone, it is MUCH better than the lumia 900. I mean, it has 32GB storage, 13mp camera, water proof, etc.

I just don’t know why you don’t see more Japanese phones internationally

it’s about deals with carriers and infrastructure. i haven’t seen a japanese brand beside sony operate in europe for a long time. i remember some panasonic phones 11 years ago that were pretty big with large screens. and another one when the race for the smallest phone was around but that’s about it. i think it was the gd55

I believe it was said some others would bring LTE-capable WP8′s to Japan, while Nokia is going with non-LTE mid-ranger.

Overall good to see Nokia trying after abandoning Japan, however I’d like to see them go with their guns blazing, not with a budget offering only.

Oh well, every little helps in getting to that 10M… ;) ;)

    • twig says:

It may depend on the economy. Zerohedge is negative on Japans.

I hope they do well there, but it will be pretty tough seeing how loyal the Japanese are to their own brands. Same can be said for the Koreans.

Speaking of which, I wonder how the 710 is doing in Korea as that seems to be the only Lumia phone offered there.

when the tiles started appearing one by one they looked really good with that glow, shinning effect. jay i tipped you on a seekingalpha article about all things nokia. is the tip form even working?

  5. zymo says:

The NTT DoCoMo roadmap is fake.

  6. lumdam says:

How about Nokia Maps for Japan?

  7. Toomas says:

Japan used to have different network standards from the rest of the world. For example GSM was never deployed in Japan, they developed a local alternative instead. AFAIK, 3G (WCDMA) was the first mobile phone standard deployed in Japan and compatible with the rest of the world.

This allows easy market segmentation: phones designed for Japanese market were useless elsewhere and vice versa.
