Gizmodo: “Definitive proof that the Nokia Lumia 920 camera is awesome” – thrashing SGSIII and iPhone 4S

| September 6, 2012 | 59 Replies

Just before lecture starts, I noticed Chris Weber tweet a post from Gizmodo of all places that the Nokia Lumia 920′s camera is awesome.

They’ve got a comparison pic with the SGSIII and iPhone 4S.

    Not surprised at all…

This will get me flogged in Hades, but it’s kinda like all the hype (well earned) of the camera for 808 when first released, but on a phone that actually holds it’s own spec wise and feature wise…

A WP8 device with pureview, and that stunning design, yummy.

    • migo says:

Now if only the screen were symmetrically aligned like on the N9, 710 and 900. But that’s Nokia for you, they never make the perfect device.

  2. arts says:

In a way I can see why pureview phase 2 is relevant.

Reading alot of smartphone reviews, the chief complaints with a camera would be its passable during day time, but absolutely horrible during the night.

With pureview phase 2(damian, if you are reading, why not nightview or something like that? Or even purelens or something.)one of the main complaints of a cameraphone is eliminated.

  3. NeutralGuy says:

I have a theory here, hear me out first.

As I was watching the video, I can’t help but be amazed with the photo taken from nokia lumia 920. It’s like a photo taken in a well lit studio.

Compared to samsung’s s3 and Apple’s 4s, the difference is so damn big that it’s like they we’re made 10 years apart.

So, here’s the theory I’m talking about.

Did you see when apple and samsung devices took the photo? It’s a pitch dark studio.

But when Lumia’s turn, the demo guy told us that the light flashed by the phone was used to focus the camera.

The thing is, why flash light?

After thinking and thinking, I came to a conclusion that while the phone was focusing the camera with a flash of light, it’s already taking some photos. And that well lit photo is then combined to the photo that’s later taken without a flash to create a good contrast ratio.

I don’t have evidences to support my case. I made this by my own observation. This is my own opinion, so please, try to understand first what I’m talking about before bashing me.

    • Peter L says:

They explain the reason for the flash, it is used for focus. The 920 focuses on the flower during that short flash, but it is not used after that.

      • NeutralGuy says:

I got your point but if you carefully look at the vid,

        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFhhBJ1URCg&feature=player_embedded

you can see that @0:40 up to 0:45, the vid shows that the lumia is taking a photo without the flash of light. Before producing the final photo, you can observe that there’s a photo taken without that flash of light used while focusing.

That photo taken without the “focusing” light was then topped by a well lit photograph, which in my opinion is the final product that’s the combination of the photo taken while focusing and a photo taken without the light.

        • Peter L says:

I don’t see anything like that in the video. I see autofocus with flash, then picture taking without the flash. You see the exact same photo for a brief moment before he shows it again.

I don’t know what to tell you. You’re too far in the deep end with your arguments.

        • Quantom says:

If you have used the N8 or N82 before, you might be better able to appreciate the autofocus (AF) assist lamp. In these two phones, they have a separate red LED light that would shine brightly at the subject in an attempt to provide sufficient light for the camera module to know what to focus on. The lamp goes off once the focus has been nailed, and the shot comes after that.

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autofocus#Assist_lamp

If your theory holds true, then the photos should all turn up red, no? Or if the person shooting were to change what scene he/she was capturing, wouldn’t there be a weird superimposition of two differing scenes?

Just like a human eye, the camera sensor requires sufficient illumination of an object to acquire focus.

        • Rohit Singh says:

I’m guessing you havent really EVER used an autofocus camera then.

    • Zipa says:

All cameras use flash (or a dedicated assist light) to assist AF in low light conditions. This has been around for decades.

    • rinslowe says:

      Let the conspiracy theories begin…

      Again.

      ;)

  4. stephen ahonen says:

I must admit nokia had done great job, i love the hardware (except the weight), unfortunately, WP OS is “NO” factor for me. I’ll buy it if it uses linux based OS.

I’m xperian now, but I’ll return to nokia if it has linux based OS phones.

  5. hhh says:

is pureview 2 better than pureview 1?

  6. Tech says:

wow The red one my next phone :) Love it

  7. Paul Grenfell says:

Oh come on, the 808 41mp pureview is still supreme.. The 920 cant replace it..

    • migo says:

True, the 808 is mostly not inside people’s pockets, while the 920 will be. The 808 was a great tech demo, but with the bulge it wasn’t viable for most people. They’ll take a nice camera if they can get it, but not at the expense of it being too large. The 920 offers huge improvements with no compromise.

    • poiman says:

Sure L920 can’t replace 808 in things like Lossless Zoom or Rich Reccording, but to be fair the 808 can’t also replace the L920 in things like Image Stabilization and Low Light. They are both GREAT at different things!

    • Paul Grenfell says:

Well im not pleased either, i wanted a second phone and thought 920 could be the one, but with a lousy 8mp sensor, how can i even consider it? If it had at least 12mp, i may have been swayed, however, i really thought they were going for 21mp..
Just not good enough for a flagship. Theres more to a camera than stabilisation.
Back to my trusty 808. Maybe Jolla or IP5 can impress me..

      • ms.nokia says:

i will be buying the 920 as soon as its available, i love the camera, allowing 5-10 time the light in is like having a much larger mp sensor, its not the size, its how u use it :)
but it was very bad public relations to let that slip up happen,

        • Paul Grenfell says:

Size matters to enhance zoom and digital cropping, as well as ability to oversample..This is what makes the 808 outstanding.

          • arts says:

            Different strokes for different folks.

I tried the 808 at stores and I always seem to be making the finer details shakey. Maybe I am using it wrong or something but the 920 would defo help in that aspect.

          • ms.nokia says:

the 920 has the best all purpose camera available in phones,
low light shots and stabilised image are more important to me than cropping or zooming pics,

            • migo says:

I agree, shaking’s definitely the biggest issue, especially with taking video.

              • Paul Grenfell says:

If they had put a decent sensor in it as well, then everybody would have been happy.. Why just 8mp? Surely at least 16mp could have been fitted?

                • toermel says:

I can see that we are still stuck with “the more mega pixel the better”.

Do you know the sensor used in the 920?

                • Dave says:

Funny how you’re a 808 proponent but also whining in the megapixel race. The best 808 pictures are 5 or 8 MP.

When I bought a Lumix LX3, the 10MP sensor was a feature, not a bug.

16 MP would require doubling the sensor area and making the optics bigger (ie camera hump). “Surely easily fitted” sure.

Photons are photons, you can capture more with a bigger sensor, or by increasing shutter time. If you can avoid camera shake, the latter gives you more compact cameras. Guess which is better for mobile devices.

            • poiman says:

Yes, Lumia 920 PureView adresses more important issues than the 808 PureView. Image Stabilization and Low Light photos are more important than Lossless Zoom for the great majority of the people.

      • MF says:

I’m currently using the 808, yet I’d love to get my hands on the 920. Both are strong in different ways. Here’s how I would summarize it:

        1. The 808 should be much better under good lighting conditions where fast shutter speeds can be used, and the full power of the 34/38 megapixels can be felt.

        2. 808 should be better in low light conditions *IF* a tripod is used and/or flash is fired.

        3. However, the 920 should be a lot more versatile when it comes to low-light, useful to capture the unexpected moment when you had to whip out the camera and capture an image single-handed, or useful if you do not have the luxury to fiddle with settings or the opportunity to take and retake the same images, or useful if you don’t have a tripod. After all, carrying a tripod kind of defeats the purpose of portability which is the great advantage of taking pictures with your cellphone.

Of course, in an ideal world, Nokia will merge the 2 technologies together, i.e. 808 Pureview with OIS and f2.0 lens. However, this will result in a physically more bulky camera which Nokia is trying to overcome so hopefully someday it will happen :)

        • MF says:

And personally for me, I enjoy taking night/low-light photos without tripod/flash a lot more than I do taking full-resolution images in bright light. Therefore low-light capability is more useful for me.

      • Just Visiting says:

IP5? Well, that will have a 8MP camera as well; yet you disparage the Lumia 920 with 8.7MP and state of the art image processing?

Is it that you don’t like WP or that you want to say ‘mine is bigger (mega pixels) than yours’? Or both?

There most likely won’t be another with 41MP, but there will be more advanced imaging on the horizon from Nokia, and needless to say, a more pleasurable to use OS (WP) in which to use it on.

      • Symbianos says:

Odd how people suddenly are saying that there’s not enough pixels. Just few months ago the tone was that you shouldn’t put too many pixels to a small sensor. I think 8 mega pizels is just fine, most of the pictures will be published in face book etc. anyways.

      • I only use 2MP mode on my 808.

    • arts says:

And they deserve everybit of it.

    • JD! says:

Now Jay will not report this news ;-)

  8. JD! says:

    1. And I thought you dont refer to Gizmodo at all!
    2. So, this is good only for videos! What about Audio recording? Does it match 808???

  9. paramjeet says:

Any new device will be unvieled today???

  10. poiman says:

I don’t understand a lot about photography but why didn’t the competing phones LED light turn on?

  11. torrents says:

Wow, amazing blog layout! How long have you been blogging for?
you made blogging look easy. The overall look of your site website is great

  12. lmiked says:

I’m not surprised, of course the camera on nokia phone is always going to be better than the other phones, good for us ;) !!!
And Nokia is trying to achieve lossless zoom in a lower megapixel count, maybe we’ll see it in pureview iteration 3 :D
And I know that we should let this go… But looking at my N9 I can’t help thinking, what if Nokia had also presented a new device yesterday as well, like N9-01 or N10 MeeGoo/Maemo/Meltemi devoce with Dual/Quad core 2GB ram and all the new pureview goodiness… oh gosh I would lose it… i would be like, Nokia, here’s a blank check, just write down any number you on it and I’ll will pay it!!!

  13. Ali Ahmed says:

N9 still the best Nokia phone. Especially with android jellybean. I am using it and it’s awesome. It has some problems but with time they will fix it. I install alpha5 and it is good except the camera and phones call still not working.
