Nokia Lumia 920 hits Reddit’s front page, impresses Redditors.

Two major old school brands launched new phones on the 5th of September 2012. Nokia and Motorola. One got people’s attention. The other…well, no one really knows. Causing a buzz and stirring up global/worldwide trending topics on twitter, the Nokia Lumia phones have reached Reddit’s front page.

http://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/ze8q1/nokia_announces_phone_with_a_wireless_charging/

This is quite a feat, especially for a phone launch. This hugely popular site around the world, and particularly around the US is often regarded as the front page of the internet. Things that get on reddit tend to go viral. e.g. The indestructible Nokia memes for which they have a soft spot for dear old Nokia.

It’s interesting to see some fresh take on Nokia. Many comments here seem uneducated about what Nokia has achieved in the past and what they did today. Fortunately, some Nokia/WP fans are long time redditors helping to educate on what precisely these Nokia features mean.

I can’t imagine their reaction if they heard about the Nokia 808 PureView’s 41MP camera with rich recording and huge sensor. Granted it’s Symbian but that would have been something exciting on the imaging scene.

Things seemed to be liked in this thread is Windows Phone. People new to it are saying after trying it, they like it. They also like the sound of the floating lens and wireless charging as well as the usual beautiful design from Nokia.

I read a comment that since Nokia has been using WP their phones have gotten ‘better’. Perhaps that’s true but perhaps Nokia’s just become more noticable now.

The Nokia 808 PureView will remain one of the best niche camera phones ever, with superlative quality in picture/video/audio. The Nokia Lumia 920 will go some way into paving a path of bringing Nokia back to mainstream, hopefully preparing them for the time when PureView pro and the floating lens gets combined into the 2013 Lumia.

unless you’re an investor yourself, you shouldn’t pay attention to stock prices. facebook is in a freefall right now too.

Don’t belive in the stock market much rather watch the quater to quater results . Stock market reacts at tines to silly things no 41 mega pixels sell the stock kind f stuff .
If you observe somedays before it rised and now it came down it means a lot of speculative traing to make money in short term .
Nokia must ship this phones as fast it can to as many part of the world .
I use apple products but to be honest apple iPhone 5 from whatever leaks we saw looks boring .
The only thing noka needs to do is get some quality speakers in their keynotes , who highlight important and proper points .
Lumia 920 has higher pixel count then iPhone 4s inspite of having big screen did they highlight it ? No they dint .
This are small things which apple makes significant and Nokia must learn doing that .

Investors apparently wanted a firm release date, pricing, carrier details, everything.

What Nokia did was more coy. I will admit I am disappointed Microsoft didn’t show all of the WP8 features, and therefore Nokia wasn’t allowed to show off a lot of WP8 features. I will say though that not giving any release dates or pricing is actually a good move from Nokia. Back when they debuted the 900, they gave a release date but no pricing. People’s excitement dropped because they knew when the phone would come out, and that was months away.

Now it seems Nokia and Microsoft are going with a different strategy. Nokia showed off its big guns; all the biggest killer features, all the major innovations from their new phones. What they haven’t shown is all the little details, and all the WP8 details that Microsoft is keeping a secret.

Without all the major details, I think this will actually keep excitement high for Nokia’s new models. Microsoft keeping WP8 so secretive makes people more anxious to found out the details. It’s a similar line of thinking as Apple who keeps silent until the very last minute about new products. The difference here is that Microsoft announced Windows Phone 8 a few months ago, and have been teasing people very slowly with features here and there.

I predict that we won’t get a firm release date from Nokia or Microsoft until the very last minute, right before launch. I also think all the big details of WP8 won’t be revealed until the very last minute. In that sense I think such a move would surprise and delight people, especially if the phones appeared on store shelves very shortly after.

Of course, all of the above requires confidence, taking a risk, a large amount of organization and logistics, and last but not least massive will and determination to stick to the plan and keep things secret.

I will further add one more thing; even if Nokia *did* give a firm release date and/or pricing and other details, I bet you the stock likely still would have dropped anyways. Investors likely would have given the reason that the phones were announced too far from launch. Investors don’t care either way, as they’re almost all waiting for the iPhone 5 launch. Nokia giving the release date now would actually be suicide for them, as Apple would take away all the attention and people would lose interest. But, giving the release date right before launch (which is presumably a while after the iPhone 5 launches) will give a nice boost to the hype.

All in all, Nokia and Microsoft are trying hard to keep up excitement and anxiousness about Nokia’s new phones and WP8, and for that I applaud them. It seems they’ve learned at least one lesson from the 900 reveal; don’t give out details too early.

Now some may argue Nokia should not even have revealed their new phones now, and should have waited until after the iPhone. Perhaps, but this unorthodox approach may work out big for Nokia. We shall see.

      • M says:

Thats basically why. The annoying part about Microsoft’s role in the presentation was that Joe B was giving a teaser what seems like a future more complete reveal of Windows Phone 8 weeks away. The main incentive for Nokia announcing the phones today instead of say a month from now like originally planned was to let people know the details as compared to the iPhone whenever it becomes available so that more people have incentive to wait for L920 as compared to just buying the iPhone outright as soon as its released. Now it creates a bit of doubt for people interested in both to wait for the Lumia to compare.

        • n8thegreat says:

Yup exactly. Everything today was a big tease, but an excellent tease at the same time. Nokia has people very intrigued now with their innovative new features, but nothing firm on when, and where the phones arrive. This mystery and intrigue keeps anticipation at a raised level.

Also like you said, now some people instead of automatically going with iPhone, may wait and see to compare it with the Lumias. It’s no secret that a lot of iPhone fans like and respect the Windows Phones. Apple fans appreciate Windows Phone because of it’s uniqueness and fresh design while still being intuitive and easy to use. Yet at the same time, some of the new Windows Phone 8 features are likely to entice some Android users as well.

    • jiipee says:

Finnish business magazine Arvopaperi said that Nokia had hinted that the Q3 Lumia sales are even below low expectations, which would be the main reason for the crash.

In addition what n8thegreat lists, Nokia only announced two flagship phones. They are bleeding marketshare eg. in 500 series and there has been no info, when the situation will change.

    • DumbTrader says:

Big investors have their own positions to protect, Apple’s or Googles freefall would be a disaster for many of them. Us consumers will be the kings here in the end. If people like Lumia, it will sell and the market reacts accordingly. Saw the devices yesterday in Helsinki and I´m sold! I personally think the new Lumia value proposition (given the price is appealing also) is second to none! The new Nokia store looks awesome too and the all the new accessories just look and feel amazing! After a long period of similar and not so exciting smartphones I’m going for #SwitchtoLumia

Ha, pretty funny seeing one of my own reddit comments screenshotted on a website I follow. I’m the idiot making the “best phone in a camera” joke, and yes I did shamelessly steal that from the @fakeselop Twitter.

I also hope for a combined PureView tech after this one. Though I would be okay with Nokia being successful to differentiate with their WP effort, I’d see it a waste of technology to limit PureView to only one still rather limited OS. One that allows direct tinkering with close to hardware options will be most welcome.

I hope Nokia will licence and share this one at least to the likes of Jolla.

I really wouldn’t want PureView to be limited to Lumia from now on.

    Cheers

Is that what nokia was teasing that would change everything? LOL! Disappointing!! Frustrating..

when will they learn? today’s competition is all about higher #s – multicores, higher MP count (not necessarily 41). because majority of the buyers are fascinated by higher #s,,, because majority of them don’t read blogs, because many of them don’t read phone reviews.

so what if it produce blurr free images or amazing videos? after all, very few people would be aware of it. very few of them would care about it. & for majority of the buyers, whether “higher/more is better” is always true or not, they always tend to believe that “higher/more is always better”.

PureMotion HD+? Why did they call it like that? Its so confusing.. when somebody hears it, its so likely that they will think its the “video version” of PureView. Why not just call it CBD+ or CBD HD+?

    Sigh…

So don’t be surprised if this phone doesn’t attract much buyers. Specially that iphone5 is coming. In fact in gsmarena website, it doesn’t even generate much interest to the readers. But when nokia 808 was announced, the readers interest was so overwhelming. It was even in the #1 spot for “months”. So what does that mean?

Oh & now i can proudly say I did a right decision – the decision not to wait for this lumia but instead bought a Nokia 808.

OH! Wait! where’s FM receiver & transmitter? HDMI? Rich Audio Recording?

& LED flash instead of Xenon? Funny! No memory card expansion slot? Ridiculous!

So for me, it would change nokia’s future..but… from “worse” to “worst”. :(

    BTW, I’m not a nokia hater, I’m an avid nokia fan. I’m a proud owner of Nokia 808 & more-than-6-year-old finland-made Nokia N70-00.

I want Nokia to return to the throne, but yesterday’s announcement was a disappointment for me. So for me, just for me, Nokia has to prepare their Plan B.

    Cheers!!! :)
