Weekend Watch: WP8 homescreen on Nokia Lumia 710 (WP7.8 custom ROM)

| October 7, 2012 | 35 Replies

A WP7.8 ROM has been flashed on this Nokia Lumia 710 to give it the WP8 style homescreen. As mentioned in the video, it’s a nice way to organize your stuff.

This isn’t the final build of 7.8. Usual warnings – don’t try this at home, you might end up bricking your device.

Hmm. I’m growing to like the new start screen quite a lot. Those adjustable tiles are great! It doesn’t look as “pathetic” as the 7.5 start screen.

When Nokia brings all Symbian (yes, I’m stuck with all that tech) features to WP, I have no reason to avoid the Lumia line. For example FM-transmitter is one thing that I’m using a lot with my 808 (and earlier with my N8), so I hope that Nokia does something to satisfy us old used-to-be-able-to-do-everything-with-my-phone users.

    • Nathan says:

FM-TX is (sadly) one of the few things one still can’t do with the N9/950.
It’s do-able, but it requires a physical mod 1st, & then some minor hackery with some existing sw.
Widgets are taken care of in Harmattan now too, thanks to 3 or 4 different projects.

    • Grazer says:

I think Nokia is certainly moving in that direction. Just look at the apps they bringing to Lumia – Play To, Counters, City Lens, Drive – all helping to make using a Lumia feel a little more similar to your symbian device. I think the next step could see these becoming more baked in to the os (although not sure if this causes fragmentation as they try to keep these Nokia only). once these apps are all in place, the hardware will come along too.

      • nabkawe says:

It’s not fragmentation if its apps, WP8 allows devs to incorporate and build upon its existing services, So no fragmentation would occur.
I don’t see any reason to buy an HTC wp without all that Nokia lenses apps.
I think Nokia’s approach is even better than Google Nexus’s where they rely totally on Google OS with no added benefits other than getting early updates.
Nokia is using Vanilla WP8 but putting top notch software but this time they actually are promoting their software which is great .
I just got my first oh my god whats this app today (LiveView 808 citylens)

Is it just me or his Lumia 710′s screen is cracked? That crack was terrible.

And anyway, I won’t risk my Lumia 710 for this. Got the bad experience when I attempt to flash my Nokia N9.
Better wait for the official update anyway.

    • nabkawe says:

I didn’t :) N9 is so cool when it comes to flashing , Just hook it up and run NSU if it went dead … NSU is awesome …
(Or i used Phoenix which helped a couple of times.

      • Silthice says:

        how to reinstall the PR1.3?
Cause I did OTA, but I want to try via NSU/Nokia suite cause some people said it’s better to use NSU/Nokia suite than OTA update

      • Jack Merson says:

Too late. I asked the Nokia Care to help me (Back then, I didn’t have a PC). But, instead of helping me, they broke the phone (It can’t be opened) and all they do was an apology. Not only that, they scratch my N9′s screen a lot. Now, I am trying to fix the phone in China (I asked my uncle) and it has been on ‘vacation’ since 3 months ago – which is why I got my Lumia 710 as my replacement. Miss the N9 till now. :(

And anyway, do you have another Nokia N9? I would like to have another one lol.

        • Trexus says:

There’s great guides/info. out there about how to replace the screen (or parts of it).
Flashing is even easier… Even a total moron could do it…

          Happy researching & good-luck.

          • Jack Merson says:

(Correction : Back then I didn’t know that the NSU will help my N9) Wow, that’s rather far.

I searched it already and while clearing the phone (I remember it was called the Zeroize or something), somebody unplug my phone from the computer!

I don’t really care of my screen and if I want to replace the screen, I would do it from the first place. But, the screen is scratched after the Nokia Care tried to fix my phone (Which they failed to do so). Immediately, I told my uncle to help me and he brought the phone to China, till now.

            • Trexus says:

NSU is one approach, there’s always more than one way to skin a cat.

RE screen, well obviously there’s not much you can do about fixing it yourself if it’s overseas.

Do your homework and you’ll be rewarded, good-luck.

              • Jack Merson says:

About the NSU, I just realized it when I comment here. So, would like to thank some of you.

Yes, I bought it on overseas so, it will be rather hard.

Too bad, the teacher asked for my homework. Now, I can’t take my homework anymore and I will surely get a bad grade. (Literally)

Anyway, thanks. Once I got my phone back, I will try it again. :)

  3. migo says:

Are you sure it’s actually a WP7.8 ROM and not a custom WP7.5 ROM with a tweaked UI? Everything I’ve read points to MS not having even started on WP7.8, so there wouldn’t even be any official code to have been leaked to provide the basis for this custom ROM.

    • Dave says:

      “Everything I’ve read”

Yeah, unless you have some special sites noone else of us has access to, or you believe every single comment from every single commenter, that is a rather odd thing to believe.

They showed the 7.8 startscreen already in June. These ROMs are based on 7.5 with some pieces picked from leaked 7.8 ROMs. There is no fundamental difference between “7.5 with new startscreen” and “7.8″, there is nothing to “start on”. 7.8 is not a port, it’s just more things to the 7.5 base.

Not that I expect it to be released soon .. :(

      • migo says:

Would they be asking for user input on WP7.8 if they’d already started on it?

        • arts says:

They did correct themselves after that.

          • migo says:

They wouldn’t have even asked if they’d already started work on it. WP7.8 was a last minute decision anyway to contain some of the fallout from phones not getting upgraded to WP8.

            • Dave says:

              Ballmer tell you that personally?

              June 2012: 7.5 plus startscreen

September 2012: 7.5 plus startscreen plus ‘what else should we add’

Somepoint hopefully 2012: 7.5 plus stuff, yeah let’s release 7.8

verey nice video comparing iphone colors to nokia lumia

  5. stylinred says:

    wow that 710 is smashed

  6. dontom says:

It looked like this one missed the fullsize tiles?

  7. arts says:

seems nice, i think the lumia 900 would benefit most from 7.8 since i feel the tiles seems rather stretched out on a big screen.

Looks lovely on my 800 thou. =D

  8. Ades says:

But why to have such an ugly and uncomfortable thing in the mobile? I’d rather not.

  9. Antonio says:

“You need to take care not to break your device when doing this”

Seems like he wasn’t that lucky.

  10. Weirdfisher says:

    This guy hates tiles
