Weekend Watch: PureView v2 OIS from Nokia Lumia 920 vs Shakey iPhone 5, SGSIII + Night samples

The difference is startling.

Check out the intentional shakes introduces, which causes heavy blurring in the SGSIII.

The fact that there is NO hardware stabilisation (only built in) on such a small device astonishes me how much stabilising PureView v2 floating lens actually provides.

Against the OneX, it is the absolute worst. I’m amazed at how much this is marketed in shops as being excellent for photos and videos.

For this one, I’m not sure if it’s on a tripod as the panning seems to level and smooth. It appears to have some trouble at the end locking focus as it’s so dark.

    OMG 920 is really cool…….nice comparison……..

  2. rhodnie says:

    lumia 920 the best!

  3. Muerte says:

Very impressive, as expected :) Come on, let it be November already! Can’t wait to make comparisons between my dear 808 and Lumia 920.

    • dss says:

Me too..the 920 will destroy the 808 in terms of video stabilization, everything else will go to the 808, by quite a big margin in some cases.

      • AreOut says:

blah, you can stabilise the video with postprocessing software, I know its not the same like hardware stabilisation but just satisfying for me, even youtube has it nowadays…

        • Rinslowe says:

“I know its not the same like hardware stabilisation”

Case in point, it’s nothing like hardware stabilisation.

Keep the blah, it insults your own intelligence, I hope you see that…

I think you can adjust brighnest on lumia, darkness isnt problem I mean. (actually I dont know lumias camera ui,I can change some settings on symbian)

  5. Mimi says:

The last video doesn’t exist :-(

I wish Lumia 920 and Nokia 808 would fall in love and make some babies with crazy pixels and THAT stabilisation …

  6. tommy says:

Very nice.. but even so, the REAL videos we are now seeing are miles away from those fake promo videos..

    • Rinslowe says:

Yeah, maybe… But you know, even a Lumia 920 on rails is still a Lumia 920 LOL…

So far what we have seen here, is a couple of average tech blog guys testing the OIS feature by walking along and purposefully shaking the phone to emphasize the effect…

That’s not really something you would do when shooting for an advertisement is it?

      Duh.

    • Nisse says:

Since when has promo videos (or pics) ever corresponded to the actual product? Give us an example to chew on;-) Of course it was amusingly clumsy (cute in a way) of Nokia with the reflection ad;–). But have we ever been introduced behind the scenes of, for instance, HTC parajump commercial or any other manufacturers commercials? Just be happy, Nokia hinted in the ad of better shake reduction and that´s what you get, no doubt about that. And remember that what you probably have been looking at now is youtube “downgraded” stuff. Wait until you can compare real deal stuff. I myself am ompressed with the 920 and I do not feel fooled by the Nokia ad, as little as I feel fooled by the HTC ad. They ar ads for crying out loud. Car manufacturers shop their car pics beyond recognition with smooth reflections and fleshier looks, hunt them down!

      • Rinslowe says:

        Exactly.

But in some weird way it really is a testament to the level of quality Nokia products are famous for!

It’s like seeing an actor in public and yelling at them for kicking their dog on the last episode, like duh! You do know that he/ she is not the character right? It’s television! It didn’t really happen!

LOL, haters don’t even have the decency of intelligence these days…

  7. Rinslowe says:

    Superb!

  8. ms.nokia says:

wow amazing, i can’t to own the 920

  9. Zee says:

Is it me or the colours produced by Nokia are nice?! :) The iPhone 5 and GSIII colours are not so nice. HTC One X was almost equivalent to Nokia but Nokia just wow me. Using One X currently and planning to change to Lumia 920. Can’t wait! The thing I worried is not having certain apps in Windows. Loving my camera apps for Android.

I was just waiting for him/her to walk straight into that pole

  11. JGrove303 says:

Somthing that just dawned on me about the Lumia 920′s weight: Wouldn’t nervious twitches and caffine jitters have less effect negatively on a heavier object than a lighter one? I’m certain that the 0.4lbs. the 920 weighs is steadier in the hand than the iAshtray (1/4lbs) or theSGSkinnypants III (0.3lbs)

    • correct says:

Yes, that is true. It’s simple physics of course, and most smartphone users/buyers have no idea about this. A heavier object will of course be easier to hold stable than a super light object. So the “extra” light S3 and Iphone 5 will both have more trouble being held stable during photo or video taking, and that’s before we even start discussing the 920′s revolutionary sensor stabilization system.
