Video: MeeGo Phone UX 1.2 (1.1.99 DE release) on Nokia N900
Last year we were so excited about the potential of MeeGo. Demoes looked good given the time frame and we were hoping for a MeeGo Phone release at Nokia World 2010 that would signify the come back of Nokia.
Lateness of the N8 meant that instead Symbian^3 became the star. MeeGo was pushed aside for 2011 and later relegated as an experiment whilst out of the blue, Windows Phone became Nokia’s primary smartphone platform.
I have pretty much zero expectations for whatever Nokia does any more with MeeGo. If it’s great, that’s awesome (I can invest more hope and faith) if not, well I don’t care.
Below is an unofficial demo of MeeGo 1.2 (1.1.99 DE Release) by maxxikhmer running from an 8GB memory card. It runs quite smoothly for the most of it (which is great given that it’s running off memory card) and is apparently smoother than NitDroid in terms of usability and smoothness. UI wise, this is bland, boring grey vanilla, minus many icons. Remember how much better the UI looked with themes?
N900 will be getting MeeGo Developer Edition, and of course the dedicated MeeGo/Harmattan phone N950 from Nokia will come out with the best/most complete experience of MeeGo handset.
Man…! For Nokia World 2011, Nokia needs to show ACTION. So far it has just been words and empty promises. I’m down for the accountability Elop is harping on about. Get rid of those execs that fail to execute.

Looking good! I kind a like those simple white icons. Just need a better background image and its good enough for me:P
Seems to me like it is really for devs only. On the N900 I’d still prefer Maemo 5 over MeeGo 1.2.
Looking forward to Harmattan…
It’s just a vanilla meego UI. I’m sure just like Htc use sense UI in their android device, samsung with their touchwiz UI on top. I will be glad if nokia do the same thing on their next Harmattan phone. Create somekind of fancy eye candy UI on top and everything will be fine. By the way when is the next nokia world 2011???
“UI wise, this is bland, boring grey vanilla, minus many icons. Remember how much better the UI looked with themes?”
whilst i half agree – it’s meant to be boring so people can customise – look at stock android – its ugly and horrible, yet looks ok when you start playing with the different launchrs etc.
I expect this is the same sort of design philosophy – except this looks a bit more usable to me, multi tasking looks much better and i prefer fennec to android browser
still – Nokia should be plastering it’s own UI over the top as we speak.
Here’s hoping we see an official demo of 1.2 in 2 weeks at the MeeGo summit/conference
the ui shown here is already good enough to challenge its competitors, still have rooms for improving!
love meego os!
think i will give meego first priority when choosing the next phone after maemo5
Looking quickly at 600MHz and 256MB RAM.
Guest… You mean n900. Of course the processor was TI Omap3 arm cortex a8 600mhz. You can overclock it to 1ghz or more. Cortex a8 is way better than arm11 680mhz processor. I really hope the next n950 to be dual core processor and way more than 512mb ram. Nokia do you hear me? yeah we want those specs on n950 phone…..
An interesting look. I think i certainly need to get myself an S^3 device or (Wp7 maybe/something hackable like HD2) to run as well if i download the developer edition of Meego to my N900. I’ll probably also do it to memory card before i do it fully too (especially if i don’t have something else to use if there is missing functionality).
Looks nice overall though, but very much unfinished.
YouTube link?

nokia is probably dead
but i’m waiting for MeeGo in phone with “intel inside” (medfield 32nm)
it’s nice but it needs be tested on new hardware since meego is getting heavier
That is the vanilla MeeGo Handset UX as it stands today, so it has nothing to do with Developer Edition at this point. Please check our wiki Q&A about DE releases: http://wiki.meego.com/ARM/N900/DeveloperEdition. I would appreciate if you removed the DE context from this story.
