Nokia Calls out Apple’s Lack of Innovation; Redirects You to Lumia

| September 12, 2012 | 74 Replies

If anything today proved how little “Innovation” Apple really does; where in fact it’s more of a Marketing scheme (they would make one hell of a marketing team for Nokia :P ). The official Nokia twitter took this as a chance to continue it’s shenanigans of poking fun at other Phone manufacturers; In this spirit @nokia called out the lack of innovation in todays presentation, stating:

Looking for Smartphone innovation today? look No further #SwitchToLumia (link was to the lumia page)

I don’t know who recently got their hands on the password for Nokia’s twitter account; but please keep him/her/it in-charge! Personally I don’t see why a company has to be stiff and rigid all the time; let us have some fun.

I didn’t watch or keep up with the announcement but my facebook feed of non techy uni mates and iPhone/BBusers (could say they’re the same crew) are saying the iPhone 5 is a bit of an anticlimax for them.

Shame Lumia 920 is not an option because no one knows when Nokia will sell it.

Situations like that calls for Mr Ballmer to be slapped with a cream pie.

    • Jimmy Chosen says:

Bukake pie lol jk NOKIA PLEASE HURRY UP!!!!! You need to take this op to show the world who’s Maharlika!

    • stylinred says:

agreed its a joke that the 920 likely wont be released until after the iphone 5 is available; especially with this ho-hum-drum announcement they should get that 920 out ASAP

      • Harangue says:

If they release the 920 after the iPhone isn’t such a bug problem, the problem is the stupid mystery around not wanting to be more specific than a 3 month time window for release.

I mean come on! How is anyone going to wait for them apart from me a stupid Nokia fan perhaps. Man, this is the N8 all over again, UGH.

        • noki says:

“is the stupid mystery around not wanting to be more specific than a 3 month time window for release” My guess,… Microsoft is actually more incompetent than Nokia at mobile OS’s, they must be hitting some kinda wall on development, how is it possible that they haven’t demo the multitasking on wp8????

          • Harangue says:

Time will tell, but the weird reluctance about revealing a more specific release date does make one draw such conclusions as you point out.

            • dss says:

NT has never been ported to a mobile hardware platform, I would imagine the whole thing is not an easy task. They will get it out, lets just hope its not full of bugs.. because if that is the case, Elop would look really silly.

      • Jari says:

Well Apple had some innovations, no big leaps but they will deliver the Iphone soon. Nokia/M$ is so gone:-( I would never buy the 920, neither the Iphone.. Still loving my N9 and 808 as well. NSN announced they will kick some 400 emplyees out.. Nokia is dying with M$. I am not proud to be a Finnish citizen any more.. Maybe Jolla will cheer me up I do hope so :-) Nokia=Finland, all gone:-( have you guys sen any advertisement on 808?? Nothing here in Finland and ordinary customer will ever see one.. .. OMG!!! It was so hard to get one here, and I was really spending my time to get my 808.. Big Fail, Nokia, you dont want cash flow.. M$ is giving You orders what you can do,.. 808 is on the blacklist :-( Shame on Nokia!

    • atom says:

      agreed.

From what I can tell…Nokia basically just announced that they are currently working on a device with some great features on an operating system that may or may not work well and maybe it will be for sale in the next few months in some markets.

    • A-S-D says:

So was the 920 announcement and the galaxy s3
The last truly interesting one for me was the n9 because i didn’t see any of the leaks before the event.

      • migo says:

The 920 actually announced some pretty awesome stuff. Using the phone with gloves on is a big deal. OIS to handle your hand shaking is also a big deal. They solved real problems that real people are having.

Similarly the GS3 knowing when you’re asleep and shutting off is pretty awesome too, in addition to automatically making a call when you select a contact and lift the phone to your ear. That’s streamlining things so you don’t have to think about how to use your phone, you can just go ahead and use it.

The iPhone 5 brought nothing new. Everything was only an incremental improvement, and the only surprising thing was the absence of NFC. At least the iPhone 4S brought Siri (as crappy as it turned out to be) and the iPhone 4 introduced a very high resolution screen and the gyroscope (big deal for gaming, which is the primary app category).

The iPhone 5 announcement is really sort of like the Lumia 900 – everything we expected, except it was missing the curved screen.

    • Jari says:

Jay, now you are talking:-) Lets wait for Jolla.. M$ path is a dead end. You are abt to see the truth. Tnx for you awesome blog! Love it!!

    • shyne says:

what ever it is .. lack of software innovations or hardware or design
the truth is Iphone 5 is going to sell like crazy !!!
that’s the bottom line ..we like it or not

people and tech sites are BLIND !!!

      • Vedhas Patkar says:

We know that. The Lumias won’t be great sellers until they have their share of sheep. No denying they are great phones, but then Apple’s marketing is clearly superior.

    • rob says:

“Shame Lumia 920 is not an option because no one knows when Nokia will sell it.”

Really? I don’t buy that attitude at all. During lunch today a few work colleagues who delight in ripping into me for having an 808 PureView are now all pretty underwhelmed by Apple’s latest offering and are all now being genuinely interested in what else is out there as they see the iPhone5 as not being worth it compared to the new competition.

I’m hoping Nokia does the sensible thing now – as iPhone 5 specs have been released, Nokia should engage an aggressive marketing campaign pointing out all of the ways the new Nokia kingphone obliterates the new iPhone. Even just a simple video of people suffering the usual British miserable weather…the one with the Lumia, warm gloves and functional phone and the iPhone/Android users who have to remove their phones, have their fingers turn blue from the cold whilst trying to tap away with numb fingers on the screen ;0p

People have been saying that the iPhone 5 was only Apples to lose, which I think they have done. Now it’s up to Nokia to show everyone why they win – bet the adverts out now, EVERYWHERE, before the iPhone 5 hits the shelves and get everyone realising where the real innovation has happened in the mobile space.

  2. Gen says:

The new iPhone is made of metal. This is something I was looking for. For me phones made of metal are more nice to hold.

    • stevebarker66 says:

…but not so good at allowing radio signals through…

Depends how you hold it, I suppose ;->

    • Jay Montano says:

There’s plastic and then there’s polycarbonate. The matte finish on the 800/N9 is quite lovely. I’ve found them more durable than the N8. I do understand where you’re coming from and perhaps it would be good for Nokia to revisit a metal phone – if at least as an experiment.

      • noki says:

if it was anything like the “My Dream Nokia #68:” I would buy it, even with wp8, Yes I just said that :)

      • incognito says:

Polycarbonate is a type of plastic, one amongst many hundreds of them (and even further, there are many types of polycarbonate). Nokia insists on the ‘polycarbonate’ term to avoid their devices being called plasticky, but they are no less plastic than, let’s say, Samsung devices (many of which were molded out of polycarbonate).

That being said, I don’t mind it at all, as long as the build quality is adequate, and if kept in an unibody form to avoid inevitable squealing between joints (tho even my unicorn N9 will squeal/squeak a bit if squeezed tightly at one point in the lower part of it). There are plastics that are much better in that department – like the ones used on modern cars dashboards – but then due to high silicone contents it would have rubbery feeling and be more prone to wear & tear, not to mention that it would have troubles holding its paint (or if colored through the color would not be striking).

I’m still waiting for my phone made of graphene layers, tho.

      • migo says:

I don’t want a metal phone. Metal is why Apple’s devices have sucked a lot lately.

    • dss says:

The iphone takes the N8 antenna design approach.. its pretty obvious. The N8 is fine in that regard..

  3. UTOG says:

Funny how most posts over at CultofMac.com don’t have comments from their regular fanboy commenters. Maybe those sheeps are still crying and badly hurt by the announcement.

  4. coolicer says:

I don’t understand what the big deal is about. The iPhone 5 isn’t some radical new vision but a good iteration over the previous model.

Gives everything people usually want in a new model, more battery, bigger screen, more processing power and even better microphones (maybe they’ll finally match the calling quality of Nokias? Since the iPhone is such a popular device, I sure hope so for the good of the world)

And these words are coming from a very anti-apple guy. God how I hate iOS though.

  5. Matt says:

Just watched a video about the ip5 on the Verge. They seemed to be struggling to find anything to say. He said it was light, black, had glass and metal, … I was chuckling.

    • Dave says:

Juwelery! Hahaha Topolsky, the same tool who:

      a) blamed WP IE9 for not showing the Verge website properly, when in fact their site uses only webkit prefixes for the CSS3 (rounded corners, etc)
      b) wants “live icons” but hates “live tiles”
      c) says 3.5″ was the perfect size display for his hands, I guess the I5 is too big now

      :)

      • migo says:

Admittedly WP IE9 ***** up a lot of sites. While that may have been The Verge’s fault in that case, it still doesn’t excuse IE9 for being barely passable.

  6. Pegasus says:

Nokia keeps loosing market share. Now samsung and LG are ready to reap from disgruntled ifans.

    • migo says:

Do you see anyone saying they want anything other than a Lumia 920? Anyone who wanted to go with Android already bought a GS3.

  7. Kruse says:

I don´t care if I have to wait a month or two to get my Lumia920.

My life will not end just becuse I dont get the phone asap.

My N9 was a good phone yesterday and will still be good phone the next coming month´s :)

  8. Sal says:

Slightly off topic, but I think there will be a cyan 920 coming according to this video. Blue charger, there surely must be a 920 also in blue, along with the 820

  9. twig says:

Apple needs to partner with Nokia as Microsoft did. Nokia rules as far as design. Think what they could do for a company with 100 billion in the bank. Apple maps was a total letdown also. With Nokia, they could switch to Nokia maps, drive and have Nokia do something with that OS.

  10. rustyknight17 says:

I agree ! Nopkia has a fantastic opportunity here ! They NEED to get the 920 and 820 out soonest ! Then follow that up with a truly awesome Lumia , something along the lines of the 1001 concept would do it !

    • migo says:

Actually, they need to make sure it’s polished before they release it. A repeat of the Lumia 900 would be really bad. They handled that one far better than Apple did antennagate, but if they repeat it people won’t be so forgiving.

      • Rob says:

Are people being intentional idiots, or are they forgetting Nokia can’t release their WP8 handsets til MS has WP8 at RTM stage?

There’s no point demanding Nokia releases the handsets until they have the software!

  11. Xandu says:

can’t wait to hear what Generalthedestroyer has to say about this…

  12. Dave² says:

Even a friend of mine that is heavily invested in Apple’s ecosystem (MBP/MBA/Hundreds of dollars purchased of apps) is not planning on getting the iPhone 5.

This has to be the perfect chance for Nokia’s comeback, and it hurts to see that Ballmer is the only reason this is being hindered.

    • migo says:

Not exactly, Ballmer isn’t doing anything bad per se, he’s just not doing anything good (which is also the problem with the iPhone 5).

The biggest hindrance for the Lumia 920 is that damn bezel. If it weren’t for that, it would be perfect, and that’s squarely the fault of someone at Nokia.

      • Zephyr says:

I hate that huge bezel at the bottom too, so i prefer 820 but anyways ip5 also has a hue space seemingly wasted above and below the display too

        • migo says:

It’s more the letterboxing that’s going to really be a problem on the iPhone 5. I guess everyone’s gripe with the L920 bezel is different, shrinking it is obviously the best option, but next best would actually be making it symmetrical (like the 710).

  13. It took this iPhone 5 announcement for me to conclude that I definitely want the Lumia 920. Love them or hate them, Apple usually bring out a phone which is up their with the best, and seeing how much better Nokia’s future offering appears to be than Apple’s shows how well Elop and the team have done.

    • migo says:

Absolutely true. Apple could have come out with something surprising (like Siri) with the iPhone 5, but the Lumia 920 delivers real improvements that real people actually need (not just want). It’s unlikely that Apple could do the same with their obsession with going thinner (in fact, they’ve kind of painted themselves into a corner in the camera department going so thin).

The Lumia 920 has a couple hiccups, and given that the iPhone 5 really delivers nothing, that is the perfect opportunity.

  14. dss says:

Well, they should start selling the 920 the same week the iPhone goes on sale.. they are giving them at least 30 days head start.

Anyway, I just realized that the 920′s screen is not 16:9 .. those fking buttons..

    • Jari says:

M$ is ruining Nokia.. sad but it the truth :-(

    • Just Visiting says:

It won’t matter! The iPhone 5 (or 4/4S) will sell millions the weekend it is released!!! Selling any device the same weekend as the iPhone 5 release will be an embarrassment for ANY oem, regardless if the OS is WP or Android.

Fact is, no single device has ever outsold an iPhone, and I doubt no single device ever will for a long time to come, especially not during the weekend of September 21st!

      • dss says:

        Good point.

      • migo says:

Also, it’s good for the Lumia to come a bit later, so that it’s something new and fresh around Christmas time. A Lumia 920 that nobody else has makes a much better gift than a incrementally improved iPhone 5 that has already been on the market for 2 months.

  15. Tired says:

Nokia’s should stop with the funny remarks and start focusing on getting a phone out to market. All this trash talking is going to come back and bite Nokia in the backside when competitor’s products out sell lumias.

  16. dss says:

I have to give to apple on the form factor/size.. much better than the 920. One handed use would be much easier, and the weight.. 920 is 70 grams heavier!

  17. stephen ahonen says:

    Don’t underestimate iphone 5, it :

    - has GSM & CDMA in 1 body
    - is 70 g lighter than lumia 920
    - the shape is (likely) comfortable if operated by 1 hand

IMO, phone’s software is almost matured now, no great innovation from software side in 2012. I guess we will return to hardware race from 2013 onward.

At first I was skeptic about touchscreen phone, I thought it will be difficult to operate by 1 hand. But, after I bought xperia U, it can be operated by 1 hand comfortably. Apple is right, 3,5″ is ideal size, too bad they follow market demand of large screen.

    • migo says:

I used to think smaller screens were better, but that’s because I had a habit of using phones one handed from sliders. The thing with the width of the iPhone screen is it’s not quite enough to give space for a full QWERTY – it’d be fine with T9 though. I’m not keen on something too huge, but it’s definitely quite clear that something in the 4″-4.3″ range is ideal (incidentally, the all touch screen BB10 phone will be 4.2″, and given how RIM got the PlayBook right and how well they understand keyboards, that probably is actually the right size).

  18. Bfrenz says:

I dont like color schemes.Jobs surely hate this thing.

    • migo says:

He’d love the colour schemes. They’re incredibly drab. I’m not sure about the back though – the interrupted look would be justified if that were a battery door, but it’s not.

  19. anon says:

It’s Nokia’s new, more aggressive, approach toward marketing.

  20. Paul Grenfell says:

I guess Jolla can rest a bit easy now, not having a next generation Iphone to compete with..
Cant wait to see what they come up with.

    • migo says:

If they’re resting they’re already screwed. They need to figure out how to make whatever the ***** they’re calling their OS scale to work on any cores, so the fiasco of having to release the N9 with a slightly upgraded SOC from the N900 doesn’t happen again.

    • tired says:

Me too! Hopefully hw keyboard and all the bells and whistles ala n900 or even better the Nokia hit that was leaked recently. Pity that didn’t come out with Harmattan

  21. stephen ahonen says:

the shape is tall, similar with TV remote control

  22. lordstar says:

I hate it that the Nokia people are emphasizing on the switch to lumia phrase while the company itself can’t even tell us the release date.

Switch to lumia yey! Oh wait, can’t even get me one now or in a month’s time.

    • lordstar says:

Oh and yeah, I think it’s time for NOKIA to offer really cool incentives to switch to lumia. Please please nokia take advantage of this opportunity maximize all the incentive advantages.

  23. Toink says:

The PureView technology has been all over the reviews and initial hands-on videos. But will someone please verify if the Lumia 920 has haptic feedback when typing?

One thing I would like to have in the Nokia Lumia 920 is haptic feedack when typing like that on my Nokia N9. It’s one feature that put me off getting the Lumia 900 when I tried using my bro-in-law’s.
