Video: Super smooth Pinch and Zoom in Ovi Maps demoed in 25 minute Nokia N8 Truck in Hamburg

August 28, 2010 Jay Montano 38 comments

In all the Nokia N8 demoes we’ve seen thus far, Ovi Maps has only been shown to zoom with the zoom bar. Multitouch is available on the N8 but it was not yet working for Ovi Maps (though it was mentioned to be coming soon)

In this 25 minute video (Skip to 24:05) you’ll see firstly, a very, very smooth panning of the maps and more importantly, super smooth pinch and zooming of the maps. There are no reloading of the maps/obvious rescaling – just quick pinch and you’re zoomed in.

Thanks to bharadwaj for the tip. If you have any stories you’d like published at mynokiablog.com, send us your tips/links here or email tips@mynokiablog.com

Near-final N8 firmware run through

August 27, 2010 Andre 55 comments

With rumors circling the internet that the final, release version of the N8 firmware is scheduled to be finished by next week (crosses fingers) The latest video that I found on the site, http://tv.mediaprovider.se should hopefully give a pretty clear insight into the sort of performance and applications (read: games) we can expect to see when the N8 is FINALLY released. From the little available here, there should be few doubts in anyone’s mind as to whether this device will be sluggish, unperforming and underwhelming at release.

Give it a look and tell me what you think!

Youtube link to the 1st video! Thanks NeNoRmAl!

Update: Another video was taken on the 25th of August, just 2 days ago. The video demonstrates a few of the normal features available with the OS.

Give it a look.

C7 preview

August 26, 2010 Andre 47 comments

The all knowing Eldar has posted another preview of a Nokia device, this time the S^3 powered C7. As is customary he speaks little to the functionality and more to the flashiness of the interface, once again stamping on it’s lack of novelty or spice.

His conclusion?

“Those who are accustomed to Symbian and know this OS will find the model attractive. It offers few interesting games, austere and outdated interface. Taken together it means that Nokia C7 will not attract new customers, but Nokia fans will choose it quite consciously. After all it is the best value for money on Symbian S^3.”

Give it a read if so inclined at the link below.

Pixelpipe on the N8

August 24, 2010 Andre 12 comments

Stumbled across this video on dailymobile showing an upgraded pixelpipe application with the ability to upload not just pictures and videos to a variety of online services  such as picasa and facebook but also regular files such as PDF’s to dropbox accounts.

Give it a look!

P.S. No information on the size of the files that can be uploaded using pixel pipe.

Could one upload full HD videos to youtube this way?!

Nokia acquires Motally

Nokia today announced that they acquired Motally a San Francisco based analytics company. Motally offers in app application tracking and reporting to be able for developers to understand their customers better in a better way. Interestingly Nokia has said it plans to incorporate Motally into Qt, Meego, Symbian and Java and also kepp its exsisting customers base which includes the iPhone and Blackberry platforms.

It has been reported that Nokia plans to use it to beef up its Ovi store, which to be honest doesn’t make sense at all and won’t add any new information that Nokia doesn’t have right now. But then again Motally has patented technology which sounds nice and makes the deal slightly more interesting.

I still find it interesting that Nokia will keep letting Motally do business with rivals, to be honest that sounds too nice and other companies that I can think off from the top of my head would not do that……

press release here

thanks to Jim for the heads up

Nokia X3 Touch and Type

Wooo, a bit of a shocker Nokia have released today, the X3-01 was leaked a while ago but no one expected it to be touch screen button tag team combo. It has caused a bit of a stir on the internets.

Key features

  • traditional 12 button keypad
  • 2.4 inch screen
  • 5 megapixel camera with 4 time digital zoom
  • dedicated messaging and music buttons
  • New ovi store
  • In selected markets it will be offered with Ovi Music limited
  • Battery life is rated at five hours talk time or 17 days on standby
  • MicroSD card slot
  • expected to be released this quarter (SWEET!!!) approximately €125
  • It will initially be offered in China, Ireland & UK, Russia, Australia & New Zealand, Singapore, Germany, Spain & Portugal, France, Mexico and Saudi & Yemen. Other markets will follow later.

Its a sweet phone and I can see myself buying this to compliment the Nokia N8 or the N9

Ovi Store TV advert

If my memory serves me right I have seen about 1 advert from Nokia on television this year, but this is set to change. I have read a lot of reports of Nokia about to launch their massive advertising efforts for the Nokia N8 with this advert below being the kickstart to the campaign. With most of Nokia’s devices being launched the second half of the year expect Nokia to be on the tubes a lot in the coming in the months depending on where you are……..

Nokia Ireland shows bank of Ireland App

August 11, 2010 John Wiegand-forson 1 comment

I visit the Ovi App store at least once a day ( I know call me sad) but I have noticed that in the last few months I have noticed here has been an increase in the number of useful apps on the Ovi store and I am happy about that, and that should increase with Qt and the powerful N8 coming.
